WARNING: Speculation Ahead!
If there is another pre-release before Minecraft 1.0, it'll most likely contain the new features they got in before the feature freeze and what they've improved since then. Those improvements include expanding existing features and optimization.
I suspect that finishing up the content of the game will take priority over optimization, but both will get done before the full release. So assuming that they are going to have quite a few more pre-releases, pre5 and pre6 will have lots of new features and almost no (if not worse) change in performance, where pre7 and pre8 will be more polished, better-performing versions.
tl;dr No, I don't think pre5 will perform better, but I am confident that the full release will.
As for the 100% CPU SMP bug, I remember Jeb saying that he fixed the problem, but I don't remember him mentioning another pre-release. If there is a pre5, then the fix will be included.

Minecon is in a few weeks, as is the release of the game. How do you imagine there will be 4 more pre-releases between now and then? That will simply never happen. I'll be surprised if there's even one more pre-release before then.

That was just an example. I don't think there will be any more pre-releases. I was just pointing out that the earlier a pre-release is released, the less likely it is that the performance will be boosted.
If the trend keeps up as it has, *if* we do see one more pre-release, it'll be pre 5 and include not only Jeb's fix but also likely some other various improvements performance-wise. Some "new" content may also be available depending on how close it is to the release date. I'm sure that it greatly depends on how much the community annoys the hell out of Jeb. Either Notch will proclaim that the masses are sated, or Jeb will become so pissed that he'll withhold it... Which, personally, I wouldn't blame him for given the extreme amount of childish internet screaming the poor guy has to put up with.
I don't mean to sound like others, but I'm on a laptop, and I can play with max settings at full speed. Your hardware isn't the only factor here. Sometimes you have user error.
There will prob be 1 more pre-release. *** NOTE:- it's not confirmed ***

It's in our interests to do another pre-release before Minecon, but if it's "pre-5" or "release candidate 1" and what date, I don't know

I wouldn't mind one more prelease if for no other reason than to fix a lot of the current bugs (i.e. one punch destroyong enchantment tables and not dropping anything, invisible SMP snow golems, lighting issues (most noticeable during leaf decay), melons only dropping one slice, etc.).
... Thanks for that useless information. :sad.gif:

Not necessarily, depends what laptop you're running.
I mean i've got a 2011 MacBook Pro, all my video options are on high and I rarely lag.
Cast aside the fear of reality, face the ****ing world.
