I used to think that 1.9 was great, the nether was looking good and now they finally have NPCs in the villages. But then I saw the digital diamond today, and it just makes it look like what Mojang put out was the mod. THIS is what i expected the NPC villages to be like, full of lots of people that actually stay in their village, and talk to you and interact with you. The towns actually look developed like it's an actual town full of people thriving rather than just a bunch of small houses that were just built to survive. I like a lot of things in 1.9 like baby animals and potions, but the NPCs are just pathetic compared to what I've seen the NPCs do in the Tale Of Kingdoms mod. What do you guys think? Is the Tales of Kingdoms mod what you thought NPCs would be like too? Also don't say that Notch is going to make the NPCs like that after release, because then we will have to pay for that.
Tale of Kingdoms looks like fun - but its a totally different thing than vanilla Minecraft. I'd hate to see something so far-reaching and specific added to the game.
And it's a lot easier for mod developers to pile on the content since the hardest part -- developing a working game itself -- has already been done for them by the people at Mojang ... who are kind enough to open their hard work up to modders.
Anyways, about half the community thinks Minecraft is already too RPG. If they add this, the forums will flip. Seriously. The whole point of minecraft is to be simple, yet complex. Take pistons/redstone for example. You can do so much, such as calculators and hidden doors. But mods are specific, especially this one, which adds way too many RPG elements into the game. They don't fit in vanilla minecraft. The is not meant to be story based. The way minecraft is now is fine.

Yeah, I agree with you guys. But I was just thinking about the NPCs specifically in the guild place. These NPCs are all that notch described for NPCs, he wanted them to be able to trade with and interact with and that's what the mod did but not Notch. I think that the kingdom building and armies might be too much for regular minecraft but the NPCs are just awesome.

No, most of minecraft is fine with the changes. A few people just keep posting over and over and can't shut up about how butthurt they are that the game isn't the same.
I think they should pay the guy that made the Millenare NPC Village mod for his code. It's worlds better than what Mojang came up with.

Perhaps you should wait and see what they look like at release? It's pretty clear that Mojang piled the beginning frameworks of a bunch of new content into the pre-release... and that much of it wasn't intended to be taken as the final, finished version.

Yeah, I can just hope that they turn out to be as awesome as this, but after the code freeze and Mojang only showing off the ender I lost a lot of hope in the NPCs.
I watched the digital diamond today and fell in love, but I agree that is not what Vanilla minecraft needs. I like the idea of chopping wood because I need to build with it, not because I need to sell it to watch a building appear out of nowhere.

It's so kind that Blizzard opens their hard work to modders....
So kind that Bethesda opens their hard work to modders...
So kind that all games for PC open their hard work to modders.

I agree that it is much easier for modders to pile on top then to create on their own, but the structures are what got to me the most. I was looking at the buildings and the first thing I thought was how great they looked. Then when I thought about what vanilla has for villages that they now seem so...minimal. Now the houses, libraries, even the blacksmith all seem like they were shooting for the least amount of effort and called it good.
I really hope that they can take a few pages out of this mods book when it comes to naturally generated structures.

Yes. I hate hate hate how bad the npc villages look, even more now that I saw this video. But it is the minecraft community's fault for sucking so bad; jeb asked on reddit for screen shots of villages to help design them. Since a majority of minecraft puts a triangle on top of a square and calls it a mansion, that's what we got.

I just assumed they didn't want villages to be these huge, impressive cities littering the landscape -- and that they wanted the feel of minecraft over-world to remain wild and unexplored.
I mean, it would sorta make building fortresses and castles and manors feel empty if the world was already full of awesome, complex structures.

That's how I rationalize it. If I was busy building a bodacious town and I ran into a town like the one in the video I would just move in.

Absolutely. What's your point?
(Although your last point isn't entirely true.)
The point is you act like Mojang is special for allowing modders into their game when in fact it's pretty much expected.
Whatev. Enjoy your little quibble. The spirit of my reply remains the same.
