First thing's first, Read the title. These are my thoughts. I'm not going to act like I know how things work, or act like I do this for a living, and I'll go ahead and tell you up front, I'm 14. I don't have a lot of experience in the gaming industry, other than spending tireless hours playing Zelda and other games, and I have no idea how this sort of thing works. I am also not going to force my opinion on you. I would appreciate it if you did the same, although If you feel like you must try, by all means. My logic will have holes, and I don't mind if you point them out.
I've just been reading through all of the polls and complaints about all of the changes coming to Minecraft, and I've been thinking:
You know, it's really not up to us. If they want the sun/moon round, it'll be round. If they want to add potions, they'll add potions. Alot of you people act like buying this game in the beta phase gives you the right to alter the plans the game's creators have in mind for the game. It doesn't. I for one think we are lucky to have the amount of influence we do with Mojang, and I've seen some people act like it's a right. Honestly, think about it. Not all games have Open Betas, and hell, Minecraft had an Open Indev! And for the games that don't have open betas, If they have a feature you don't like once it's released, it's funny how most people would just refute it, or be like, "Oh that's so stupid.". I've never heard of anyone sending a letter to a Game developer, asking them to patch a game because of something already in it. Some people will try and refute this part of my opinion with, "yeah well Minecraft is a Beta, not a full release, nothing in it is set in stone."
Oh yeah?
BAM. you just negated your own arguement, should you think that.
Yeah, it's true, stuff like potions and the round sun/moon isn't set in stone. But neither was a square sun/moon, or even stuff Newer minecrafters find essential, like Powered Rails.
I guess my point is this, yes this is a Beta, and I understand people are tired of hearing that excuse, but listen again. THIS IS A BETA. I don't know the precise definition of it, and I'm not about to go to Wikipedia, a site where things aren't always 100% accurate to back my self up for it. But I'm 99% certain that it does not say the words "Where the Tester's every complaint and desire is accounted for, noted, and answered."
Alright, I'm done.
Sorry you had to put up with me capitalizing words where they shouldn't be, it's a bad habit of mine.
I'll leave you with this though, a quote from another Indie game which I think fits here perfectly. Just look at it in the metaphorical sense. as Minecraft is NOT a weapon. Probably.
One who fights with another's weapon and considers that force his own is witless. One who blames his tools for that which his own power cannot achieve is a fool.
While I agree, a lot of it is immature complaining, people should be providing feedback. Thats part of the point of open development, so they can see how people are reacting to new features, so we can find things that need improving. People just need to fidn the right balance so its feedback and not complaining. and yes, you can have negative feedback without complaining.
This may be beata, but we already payed for it and therefore we can expect quality. And the community in minecraft is important, we would never have gotten pistons if we didn't demand them.
Edit: My signature should point out enogh that I mostly agree with you anyway. Most complaints are against a balanced game, not for it.

Feel free if you to ^ my posts if you find them helpful.
Also, yeah I get a lot of threads like this are made, and I'm not going to change the fact that people will complain. That's human nature. I'm just trying to start an educated discussion about this. I truly don't understand why people act like they have the right to decide the way things are in Minecraft. After all, the truth is, once you're hooked, you're hooked. I HIGHLY doubt anyone is going to quit Minecraft over the shape of the moon, or potions. They'll rant and ***** about it for a couple of days say things like "MOJANG HAS TAKEN AWAY MY RIGHTS, THEY HAVE GONE TO FAR!" and all the while use stupid fallacies like Moral Equivalence and Dogmatism.
The fact that it is beta means nothing I mean honestly. I think everyone that says "Hey its beta!" Thinks that once the official release is here that everything will be peaches and cream, cause it wont. Itll be the same.

Perhaps I was misunderstood...I didn't mean that they should stop suggesting and providing feedback, and I agree with you TOTALLY about the balance they need to find. Sorry if I came off as, People should just shut up and Let Mojang do what they want. I assure you that isn't what I meant. But there is a fine line between feedback, and wrongfully accusing Mojang of 'Going to far' which is a lot of what I have seen.
This may be beata, but we already payed for it and therefore we can expect quality. And the community in minecraft is important, we would never have gotten pistons if we didn't demand them.

I see where you're coming from although again, I think I came off as "Everyone should just stop suggesting things to Mojang and let them do what they want", and that wasn't what I meant. I agree that suggestions are an Important part of the Minecraft community, and are necessary for the game's development.
The fact that it is beta means nothing I mean honestly. I think everyone that says "Hey its beta!" Thinks that once the official release is here that everything will be peaches and cream, cause it wont. Itll be the same.
I agree. People will still complain and whine, but Hopefully on a much smaller scale then they are now. You can't please everyone, no matter how hard you try.

You're 14? You must be either the product of great parenting, or your own parenting. There's just one last step on your road to maturity, and hopefully you don't reach THAT until you've had a chance to take full advantage of youth.
As for your argument, I'm in full agreement. What I think is both great and terrible about Minecraft, is that it appeals to gamers all over the spectrum. Here in the community, those perspectives mingle and often clash, resulting in the bevy of complaints against both the game and its players.
Also, the 1.9 "discussion" forum has become a hotbed of controversy due to the topic of discussion, which is, "What about 1.9 do you like and/or dislike?"
There are few people, even MY age, who can express their complaints maturely and remain open to direct criticism. Perhaps all we need to remember is just how diverse this community has become, and what players say about Minecraft can only strengthen it's potential to amaze.

I agree here, I've seen all sorts of Gamers in Minecraft. That's why I think there will always be some minor strifes between the game's supporters, because of its wide range of players. People will Suggest Guns, Others will try and reason with them and say the Bow is enough. Other People will suggest Major changes in the game to strengthen it's ties with RPG's more, and Others will try and convince them That Potions and Enchantments are enough. (Even though clearly, Bows are not the same as guns, and Potions and Enchantments aren't even necessary for an RPG.)
Also, the 1.9 "discussion" forum has become a hotbed of controversy due to the topic of discussion, which is, "What about 1.9 do you like and/or dislike?"
I know...I understand that to some extent, they ARE discussing the 1.9 Update, but also, there becomes a point when 'discussion' turns into a weakly fueled unnecessary debate.

Perhaps all we need to remember is just how diverse this community has become, and what players say about Minecraft can only strengthen it's potential to amaze.
That was probably one of the best ways to wrap up a post, because of how truthful it is. Minecraft, no matter how many changes it goes through, will still be Minecraft. Much like the real world, it will evolve and change. and although some will fear change, it's inevitable. Minecraft should not remain the way it is simply for the benefit of those that already support it, but it should branch out, in order to attract and gain new players. Natural Selection applies to everything I guess. *shrugs*
This may be beata, but we already payed for it and therefore we can expect quality. And the community in minecraft is important, we would never have gotten pistons if we didn't demand them.
This is a problem I see much too often in people, especially the youth. There's nothing wrong with the act of demanding itself. The problem is in the mentality people usually have when demanding. In Western cultures, particularly Americans, many people have an unfortunate sense of entitlement that results in an arrogant outward appearance and the belief that they have the right to complain and make other people feel bad when they feel bad. These people are rarely thankful for anything they get, because they feel like it was their right all along when really it was a privilege.
The Minecraft community could've gotten pistons without demanding them. The idea of a piston is very simple, unlike some other grand ideas people are pressing for (like the Aether), and is very easy to implement. If Mojang saw that an idea as simple as a piston was vastly popular and widely used, they'd put it into their game if they had any sense.
BTW I'm not saying you're like this Atanarr. You just might want to watch your word choice as it can imply nasty things.
You're 14? You must be either the product of great parenting, or your own parenting. There's just one last step on your road to maturity, and hopefully you don't reach THAT until you've had a chance to take full advantage of youth.

First of all, I'd like to thank the OP about being honest about his age, an admirable act considering how much stigma being anything below 15-16 has on the interwebs. Secondly, no offense to Araknuum or you, but you've got a LOT more maturing to do. That's not a bad thing though! Where you are is way ahead of your peers (unfortunately for society), so it's clear you're not a bad guy.
Also, I think it's all in the parenting. There are many reasons why kids are so screwed up these days, but I think one of the more prominent ones is lack of good parenting. I've seen with my own eyes too many parents that just can't seem to say "no" to their kids. There's definitely a lack of discipline and way too much spoiling, something that contributes to that whole "entitlement complex" I was talking about earlier.
Lastly concerning this particular quote, I'm assuming you're from America Araknuum? There's no reason to be surprised that the older folks are no better than the spoiled youth of America. America is a country that babies its citizens for way too long. Almost everyone eventually learns their lesson, but I feel like it takes way too long many times.

I wish this were the case. I think, however, that the presence of vast hordes of socially offensive, rude, irresponsible, and generally not too bright people serve as a depressing counter-example.
As a last thought, the only reason I think people should be allowed to openly voice their opinions about Minecraft and criticize it (criticize mind out, not whine) is because it's an OPEN beta.
I think open betas are asking for trouble.
A CLOSED beta is more like it. :biggrin.gif:
I think a small part of the problem is lack of foresight. There are complaints about systems that are either half finished or rely on other future systems to make sense. But they treat every release as if it's done and what they have is what they get.
I think some of the issue could also of been avoided if Notch had been able to lay out a loose road map. Something to let us know where the game will end up and what he feels it should look like. If he wanted to have a game that included seasons, potions, levels, enchants, boss fights and so on from the beginning. Then maybe people wouldn't of been so opinionated when they were finally included.
We honestly don't know how much of the development was clearly laid out ahead of time. Instead we base the development entirely on what we see through tweets and actual patches. It appears to be haphazardly thrown together, when it's likely closer to the opposite.
We have no right to tell Notch how to manage his game. He began it as a hobby and did what he liked. We merely paid to experience the fruits of his labor. That doesn't mean we have any right to dictate how he should proceed. The fact he made money is merely chance in the grand scheme of things, it still and likely will be his hobby for a long time. We have no right to interfere.
We have a right to voice our opinions because it doesn't interfere with Notch. He can pick and choose what he will listen to. Notch has a right to make his game how he wants, he can do this because it's his property and he can do as he wishes with it. What people fail to understand is that your rights extend to the end of your nose, no more and no less. Your rights should never interfere with another person's rights. EVER.

About the Selected quote in particular....well that just made me smile because of how truthful it is.

I hadn't thought about the right to voice the opinions....I'll be honest, there isn't much I can disagree with there. Yes, every one has the right to voice their opinion, I just wish they would find a better way to do it than act as if they themselves bought the rights to the game... Thanks for the feedback!
"I truly don't understand why people act like they have the right to decide the way things are in Minecraft."
People can be massive dicks in real life. The internet multiplies that effect quite a bit. I mean think about it, the title of this thread recognizes "white knight" as an insult. What the hell internet, what the hell.
Also, we may not have the right to decide the way things are in Minecraft completely but we sure as hell have the right to voice our opinions. If we don't like something we turn to mods. Beautiful things they are.
Buying Minecraft is a bit like buying a random plant (except more expensive). Some people bought that plant when it was a seed. They weren't sure what it would turn in to. They weren't even sure if it would grow at all. The only thing they knew is what the person who sold it to them said. Slowly that seed grew, and the plant it would become began to take shape. More people bought that plant at later stages in its growth. After a little while, it began to develop more unique features. Some people really liked these; others didn't. People who bought it at this later stage of growth had a better idea of what it would become, but it cost them more because it had grown more. As the plant developed more and more features, people began to get stronger opinions about it. Some didn't like the look of the flowers, or the taste of the fruits. Some of those gave up on it; others decided to keep waiting, to see if it would change for the better. Some people didn't dislike the fruits or flowers at all. They stayed with it without any doubts. I think right now, the Minecraft plant is growing a lot of really unique flowers/fruits/whatever. There are so many of these flower-fruit-things that the branches coming off of the stem are having trouble supporting each one. Many people are so impressed by the flower-fruit-things that they don't care at all. Others are getting annoyed about how the branches are sagging. Others just hate the flower-fruit-things.If you couldn't understand the metaphor, this is what it is, basically.People who bought the game in the very early stages didn't know much about what they were buying other than what Notch told them. As the game got bigger, and new things were added, more and more people bought it, because it was easier to tell what it would become. With recent updates that have added many new things to the game, varied opinions have developed. Some people like the new features; others don't. With the 1.8/9 stuff going on, many, many new features are being added. The issue is that they aren't being released without issues. Some people don't care about the issues because the stuff is so interesting. Some people like the new stuff, but are annoyed at the lack of completeness. Some people just hate the new stuff. Also, there are people who try to influence the growth of the Minecraft plant thing. Some play music for it (apparently that can actually affect a plant's growth (the metaphor here is of the people who suggest things to Notch)), some change where it is and what things it recieves (more/less sunlight, water, different soil (texturers)), and some even change its genetic makeup (though I don't know anyone who does that IRL, it is supposed to represent modders). Through these different things, people can change the plant to be how they want it. Just a metaphor/opinion thing. Take it as you will.
Wow, that was a really creative analogy :ohmy.gif: I actually think that was a very accurate portrayal of it
sorry for the triple post, I really just wanted to make sure I replied to everyone

Okay, I'm a little confused on how your tone was but I'll give it a go? I used white knighting in that since because a lot of times it offends people...They don't like it when people act self righteous and a little over defensive, even if it is, in truth, purely intended. I am sorry if that offended you :sad.gif: Yeah, I agree with the right to voice your opinions, I should probably ramify my OP to say that... I apologize. and I understand people can be dicks, but I don't really think that that's an excuse for them to ALWAYS act like it...Thank you for the feedback, even though i'm not sure we see eye to eye, it was still a nice response :smile.gif:
I remember when I paid for access to Indev, that Notch clearly stated I'll get updates as soon as they are added and that I will be able to access the content as long as I don't cry about anything breaking.
I'm cheated. I'm not getting my access to the content as soon as it's added. (Hunting for pre-releases anyone? They aren't on the client and not on the official website as far as I know.) I have also kept my promise not to cry about anything being broken.
I'm still content however, I'm excited to play the game when it's released at the end of this year. Anybody know if they'll still add updates even after release like they promised?
White Knighting is when you agree with everything a chick says, and defend her when people call her a *****, even when she is, in hopes of getting in her pants. Or, since it's an internet, getting a naked picture, or something.
So no, I really hope you're not White Knighting.
In relation to the actual discussion, I've only ever heard one example of more content in and of itself actually made a game worse, and that was a skating game no one played, anyway.

Yes, every one has the right to voice their opinion, I just wish they would find a better way to do it than act as if they themselves bought the rights to the game... Thanks for the feedback!
Wow, that was a really creative analogy :ohmy.gif: I actually think that was a very accurate portrayal of it
sorry for the triple post, I really just wanted to make sure I replied to everyone
Just because it's not what you like, doesn't mean it's not quality.
I'm cheated. I'm not getting my access to the content as soon as it's added. (Hunting for pre-releases anyone? They aren't on the client and not on the official website as far as I know.) I have also kept my promise not to cry about anything being broken.
I'm still content however, I'm excited to play the game when it's released at the end of this year. Anybody know if they'll still add updates even after release like they promised?
I wish I had Homestuck around when I was 14. :C
So no, I really hope you're not White Knighting.
In relation to the actual discussion, I've only ever heard one example of more content in and of itself actually made a game worse, and that was a skating game no one played, anyway.
