Too lazy to quote, but somebody on this thread says "Are you good at minecraft combat? Well too bad, somebody else grinded more". Well, first off, there is little to no skill involve in minecraft combat. I know some skill is involved, but this isnt Black ops where you have to aim, and shoot, and be alert, and choose the right gun for the job. Unfortunately, minecraft combat is underdeveloped, and i dont think it will ever involve that much
"skill". So, to take the place of "skills" leveling has been added. I just think this makes more sense then trying to find "skill" in a minecraft fight...
[rant]Well, I have to say, so many people throwing around the word "RPG" but I can't help but feel most of those people are mindlessly hating on something that doesn't even count as an RPG. Me thinks people are really just hatin' on the word "RPG". It reminds me of a while back. Someone was complaining how every game nowadays are incorporating "rpg elements".
Just because you unlock new weapons at certain intervals doesn’t really make it an RPG element. Levels were added in MW2 to give people a sense of accomplishment and to get them to continue playing. That doesn’t mean they are trying to add RPG elements, it means they are trying to get people to play more. It also rewards people who play more, another way to get them to play more. Modern Warfare II is NOT a ****ing RPG just because you unlock better guns at higher levels. It’s a ****ing first person shooter.
Really, I feel as though some people here on these forums are basically calling everything in any game an RPG element if it has the teeny tiniest similarity to something they once encountered in a RPG. NEWSFLASH! Just because it has levels doesn’t mean its an RPG, same with money, or collection quests. The problem is that you people don’t know what the hell an RPG even is and your just tacking it on to everything. Yes, there are a lot of games that cross two genres like Fallout 3 or Mass Effect, but Minecraft isn‘t one of them.
Its a way of making games appeal to bigger audiences. Heck, RPGs used to all be turn based, but does that mean that real time ones are action RPGs because they stole that from action games. Don’t be a ****, if your going to make an argument about RPG elements in Minecraft, please ask yourself if these are true “RPG elements” before you pull out the flippin’ Drama Llama on these forums. [/rant]
You know technically any game is a role playing game because in all games you assume one role or another. Just saying...
Sure there are specific aspects that make a game more "RPG"-like such as skills, talents, "upgrading levels" etc but you still play a role in the game :tongue.gif:

Role-playing video games use much of the same terminology, settings and game mechanics as early pen-and-paper role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons.[2] Generally, the player controls a small number of game characters, usually called a party, and achieves victory by completing a series of quests and reaching the conclusion of a central storyline. Players explore a game world, while solving puzzles and engaging in tactical combat. A key feature of the genre is that characters grow in power and abilities, and characters are typically designed by the player.[1] RPGs rarely challenge a player's physical coordination, with the exception of action role-playing games.[3]
Role-playing video games typically rely on a highly developed story and setting,[4] which is divided into a number of quests. Players control one or several characters by issuing commands, which is performed by the character at an effectiveness determined by that character's numeric attributes. Often these attributes increase each time a character gains a level, and a character's level goes up each time the player accumulates a certain amount of experience.[5]
Role-playing video games also typically attempt to offer more complex and dynamic character interaction than what is found in other video game genres. This usually involves additional focus on the artificial intelligence and scripted behavior of computer-controlled non-player characters.[3][6]
The key items that usually make up a true RPG video game is following a story and going on pre-defined quests. Minecraft has no story and no pre-defined quests.
If I am playing Pac-Man, I am not playing the role of Pac Man in an RPG, since there are essentially no attributes that make up an RPG in that game.
Most of the people in these RPG threads should go and read up on what an RPG actually is.
Ive been looking over a lot of the threads here on this forum and have been wondering, why as a community does everyone (or at least a decent percentage) not want there to be RPG elements such as skills in minecraft.
Reasons for RPG elements (skills, boss, quest) -
They add new gameplay elements to the game, and make it feel more polished
You do not have to use them if you dont want them, you can still play minecraft the same way you have for the past year
Reasons against-
It ruins minecraft?
Honestly how would adding skills ruin minecraft?
You didn't know? This is a Action Adventure Fantasy Space Flight FPS Sim. This isn't a RPG! Meh this game is what we make of it, That's how it was made.. If you want you can remake any game, town, art in this game. It's what YOU want it to be.. If you want to make a Castle, You can. If you want to remake Fort Knox, You can. If you want to remake the Space Station, a Giant Master Chief, Jesus, Turn the world into a moon.. What ever.. In multilayer it's a MMO :tongue.gif: Some mods turn it into a game where you can fly planes. If you don't want to play it as a RPG, then don't. I see it as Lego's for Adults :biggrin.gif:
Mining Obsidian can be done without changing game mode to other than peaceful. The game already forces you switching to != peaceful to get a brewing stand as of the latest pre-release.
All things in the game should be possible in all game modes. As long as potions only available in non-peaceful modes it breaks how Minecraft works (play it as you want and do what you want).
Getting potions will be able to be done in peaceful im sure, this is still a pre-release! So your argument doesnt really fit in here
it's crappy because progression in minecraft up to this point has been based on things that exist in the game world. i like that i can define my own goals and "physically" see and interact with them, if that makes any sense. i think that's so much more compelling than increasing a completely abstract counter so my dude's arm can swing 0.2 seconds faster.
the "rpg" stuff is useless unless you can use it to do new things, and if you have to use it to do new things, well then, that's pretty ****ing annoying.
i don't think this will DESTROY MINECRAFT or anything, it's just not the direction i'd personally like it to take.

Now you'll be able to "physically" imbue your sword with magical power. And you'll still "physically" lose that sword if you drop it in lava or when it breaks.

I think it's perfect.
magicking my sword is one thing, having to be at MAGIC POWER LEVEL 5 to do it is another.

You still had to physically pick up orbs that enemies drop when you kill them. Think of it like your magic orb sack. A secondary inventory just for your physical magic orbs.
The thing about Minecraft that I've noticed is that every person sees something slightly different in it. I remember before "The Adventure Updates" that there was a large and vocal group of people complaining that Minecraft needed skills and potions and more monsters. Now that we've got a lot of this stuff you've got another group of people jumping out of the woodwork to complain that they think Minecraft needs to be just a plain sandbox game.
Reading through the Mods board reveals a plethora of changes that people want in Minecraft. Some want lots of industrial stuff. Others are all about new and different mobs. Still others want proper PVP or Guns or grappling hooks...the list is endless. If you read the threads for these mods you see lots of people wondering why Notch doesn't add this or that or the other. How if he'd just add 'x' mod to the game, it would be perfect.
My point is, Minecraft seems to present such a blank slate that everyone sees what they want in the game. Everyone plays slightly different. Sure, you can pick out certain groups, but at the end of the day no person's Minecraft experience will be quite the same as another's. I think this creates a sense of ownership over the game.
For every person, Minecraft feels somehow personal. I think because of this it can be hard for some to understand changes made that don't suit personal tastes. We become so attached to our play experiences that we start to expect the game to change in ways that are equally personal.
It's an absurd idea, but it's very human. The things we love are always the things it hurts the most to see change.

That's a great way of putting it. Personally, I've been just going along for the ride and have loved everything except how the NPC's turned out looking.
No, you can't play without these elements. Why? It limits what you can do. Very skilled at Minecraft combat? Too bad, some guy grinded and now has better skills, despite being a newbie. Sick of RPGs and want some other game style? Well you can't if Minecraft becomes an RPG.
Want a suggestion? Don't make comments like these, or you may get flammed. Just continue playing, since you like RPG, afterall what matters if you have fun! :wink.gif:
They are optional, you can downgrade to previous versions.
I voted no, I want to see more creatures and things but also crafting and building items. I got enough of dragons from World of Warcraft but I do like like the alchemy with potions and enchanting isn't too bad. I really liked the idea of survival in an unknown world. The transition to a world with dragons and whatnot kind of kills that. Besides they have that Scrolls game coming out which is more fantasy like.
I want something that is more different in some ways with a few of the standard things like zombies, skeletons, etc but also other creatures that aren't such big Mary Sue's like dragons.

Overgrowth indie game FTW!

so instead of arguing that certain features are a Good Thing, you've decided to go down the pedantic nerd route?
regardless of whether hitting things to make a bar fill up is a ~*true rpg mechanic*~ or not, i think its inclusion in minecraft is kind of crappy!
Why do you think it is crappy? More information would be appreciated.

I'd say RPGs are more like sex to most of them; they've heard about it and watched a few videos on the web but have never 'played the game' :wink.gif:
