While it is true that hunger changed the system, you still need to eat food in order to regain health, the mechanic remained the same, it merely got refined.
And it is true that it could change, it is also true that a clown could jump out of your closet and smack you with a giant hammer, but I doubt you are constantly checking, because you know as well as I do that it isn't going to happen
"Refinement" would imply that the basic format for the equation remained the same, and the values of the variables were changed. That is NOT what happened. The fundemental mechanics behind how the resource was managed changed, from [food in = health increase] to [if food > X then periodic health increase].
The situation would be no different for skills. It is entirely possible, and even likely, that the mechanics we have become accustomed to will not be the default values or states for those abilities if a skill based system were implemented. The level of capability we have been accustomed to could be set as the values achieved when "maxed out."
... you can still play minecraft the same way you have for the past year
That is still an optimistic assumption about the potential impact for a skill system, not a fact.

I feel if one ignores the new addition and only does creative mode, you will still have the original Minecraft. This is just a new game mode really, not "total" change forced in Minecraft. Creative mode = Minecraft classic, Adventure/Survival RPG mode = The New Minecraft. However I feel not all will agree with that.

I don't think that's accurate at all, it'll likely be like any other edition, if you like what it does you pick it if not then you don't, Notch himself has stated some of what kind of things skills would give you, they were the typical things one would expect, increased mining speed faster walk speed more damage, exactly the same kind of things the enchantments now cover. nobody ever NEEDS these things any more than anyone NEEDS an enchantment or even NEEDS a diamond pick, and far less so than even that, There won't be any worlds withheld from you if you lack the skill.
As for pvp, there's no difference than if someone just has higher tier equipment, if you want to compete you'll probably use the skills, but if YOU don't like them but others do then maybe you should have found a server where they didn't have skills enabled, it does not hurt you any to have them exist, and I doubt even if they did you'd be greatly bothered, the game will ALWAYS be minecraft, it's about mining and exploring, who cares if they have other features on top?

This is true, PVP is really never balanced, someone will have a flint n' steel or lava bucket, or better armor or equips, skills would just add onto this.

really? i find it hard to believe a skill system would prevent one from mining for resources, building, exploring and fighting monsters. the biggest change minecraft has had was to the food and hunger and even then it is easy to deal with.
I don't understand the complaints. What Notch is doing right now is *PERFECT*. He is adding RPG elements without messing with the fact that Minecraft is centered around the items you collect and not how powerful your character is. I believe Enchantments and Potions are definately in the spirit of Minecraft. I think it's a clever way of keeping the item based feel of the game without turning it into a race to get to the maximum level.
But its not becoming "RPGCRAFT" its not adding a story, not adding any specific goal you need to complete. All its doing is offering more customizing options and benefits to doing some things in game. Its like adding more fish to increase the desire to fish... if you get what im driving at. All you would do by adding skills is add more customising and the incentive to go out and fight mobs.
Whilst newer features are almost always a good thing, I just suddenly have no urge to go mining- create a diamond cube, silk touch the hell out of it. Never go mining again. Sorted for life.
To be honest, I haven't touched 1.94 though, so I could be just talking out of my ass.
I don't feel like any mod "ruins" the game. The problem is, this all feels like a mod... This should all be an expansion pack, not the base game. Why wait until only a couple of months before the final release of the game to add such a huge number of complicated new features? Many of these new features are neat, but seem to be based on exploration and adventuring, ignoring the 'mining and building' that drew me so deeply into Minecraft. With the addition of items used to get to new areas (The End), that can only be obtained by killing frustrating new monsters (Endermen), along with a variety of other 'monster drops', I can't help the feeling that even if I play in Peaceful mode, I'm playing a crippled game.
As long as they're working in content that was previously left to the realm of mods, I really think they need to take a close look at hogofwar's Peaceful Pack, which makes previously monster-only drops into items that can be obtained through peaceful means (bones from fossils, string from flax farming, gunpowder from sulphur, etc). That way, the members of the community who want to build things but find Creativity mode to be too easy/cheating, will still be able to enjoy the game to its fullest.

The point of this patch was to increase the desire to travel, instead of building, as well as fine tune the fighting mechanics of the game, that use to be point and click, repeat.
And yes ^^^^ spoken like someone who follows notch to the end of the earth.... and will fall off the edge xD
How long will it take until Notch implements some super-duper ore makes it possible that furnaces have energy for 1000 blocks with one piece of said ore – Only mineable with some enchanted tools and on “Strength IV” potion?
are people so out of their minds they have to complain about something that doesnt even exist?

It'd still be a "mine resources, do stuff with them" game? I mean, what if he decided to make a material that can only be safely mined with diamond, that allows you to access an entire new world map when mined in sufficient quantities?
Wait, he already did that. So other than hysteric non-accurate rambling, what was the point of your post?
there are too many chickens and my sheep and cows have disappeared. I have over a hundred eggs that I found close to my house, and nothing to do with them.
I have an expansive mine and only found one diamond node, of 5 diamonds. Maybe I'm unlucky since I know I have an efficient mining method. But I wonder if there are less ores now.
I noticed that even with a diamond sword it takes 4 hit to kill a zombie and 3 to kill a creeper. Its rather annoying for me to have a diamond sword and still have trouble with creepers. I wish I could be as offensive and 1.8 and before against creepers.
On normal creepers are VERY good at killing me unarmored. But when I made an Iron set I was very glad at how much protection I got. It made a world of difference. I never needed armor before 1.9. but maybe it balanced out, defensive wise.
I thought the levels would make me stronger but since enchanting takes away my levels to make enchantments I'm disappointed that Levels will likely not help my stats.
Lastly, I hate how animals trample my crops. but that's easily fixed.

These forums hate new things/change.

My answer
I'm going to *love* PVP.
we asked for features and we got them!
THIS IS A GAME IN BETA!
notch could make this into a closed beta so people like you wont whine about cool new features!
this guy is the boss ->
ignore the typos

I'm assuming this would make you have two diamond cubes.

Such as grass usually drops dirt, but with silk touch it drops grass
It doesn't magically clone diamond blocks
