Ive been looking over a lot of the threads here on this forum and have been wondering, why as a community does everyone (or at least a decent percentage) not want there to be RPG elements such as skills in minecraft.
Reasons for RPG elements (skills, boss, quest) -
They add new gameplay elements to the game, and make it feel more polished
You do not have to use them if you dont want them, you can still play minecraft the same way you have for the past year

It ruins minecraft?
Honestly how would adding skills ruin minecraft?
Because of how sudden the change is.
All of the new elements have been implemented in the past few weeks, if it was more gradual, i think there would be fewer complaints.
It should be noted that skills likely won't ever be implemented, as enchanments and potions take their place.
EDIT: Most people dislike the idea of RPG elements because they think the sandbox wouldn't be a sandbox with RPG stuff in it. Nobody wants Minecraft to have an endgame, or story, or anything like it.

Yeah, it's essentially not 'this feature sucks' but 'all these new things omg idk what to do anymore I can't play right!'

No, you can't play without these elements. Why? It limits what you can do. Very skilled at Minecraft combat? Too bad, some guy grinded and now has better skills, despite being a newbie. Sick of RPGs and want some other game style? Well you can't if Minecraft becomes an RPG.
Want a suggestion? Don't make comments like these, or you may get flammed. Just continue playing, since you like RPG, afterall what matters if you have fun! :wink.gif:

But you actually CAN play without ever enchanting or making potions or doing any other RPG feature. No one makes you. Your wrong in the sense that your arguement only applies to SMP Pvp. So what if someone else has an enchanted sword. You don't need to get one because he does more damage. You might want to do something, but you can also ignore the feature.
Sadly, noobs think that adding RPG-stuff makes the game not so sandbox, but none of the RPG-features changes or removes ANY sandbox part of the game. You can simply play in peacefull and deactivate strongholds/villages when you make your world, and then you will have exactly an old fashioned alpha-style minecraft.
Ive seen many games (like TF2) completly change features because one crowd wants things changed (read competitive players), while you might focus on PVP in minecraft, others like building, others like exploring and looking for dungeons etc.
You can play the game without using any rpg elements, (im not taking a story btw, I dont see the point in adding a story it is a sandbox) and the point of having a sandbox is that people can play how they like. Adding a feature such as Skills wouldnt in anyway make the game any different if you choose not to use it.
Final Note -
I do think it is stupid if Notch doesnt add skills and insted sticks with only enchantments. Enchantments are not permanent, and they are far to random to make me want to waste 40 hard earned skill points to get them :tongue.gif:
I prefer the current RPG elements to skills. At the core of Minecraft, without that which you have built, crafted, enchanted, or brewed, you'll be just as weak as when you started. Also, splash potions open up a whole slew of new opportunities.

Ammm since when does minecraft combat skills effect the game? Does it really hurt your ego so much that some new player is better then you because he doesnt have problem with potions? will it change minecraft for you if someone somewhere sometime is using a potion and kill more mobs then you?
No it doesnt minecraft is about cooperation between players to build and survive if you dont like potions dont use them im sure the other players wont kick you from the server because you dont kill a lot of mobs.
Minecraft can be a sandbox with RPG elements even if notch will add a boss battles and quests from Npcs (not something that involves a story), you still have the freedom to choose what you want to do, build a house fight monsters mine or go to the nether - and thats what sandbox games are about.
We dont hate , but dislike the idea of some RPG elements in minecraft , i dont dislike leveling , or experience , with the enchantment system they work well.
But minecraft has never been a game were you upgrade your character other than getting better tools/weapons/armor.
That is why i dislike the idea of more jumping , more speed , more damage , if they are implemented by an unlimited time.
Having it in tools/weapons/armors makes it balanced , because you will eventually lose it , that makes sense , if you an enchantment for unlimited time , then just get all enchantments as fast as you can and play god mode.
Balanace is very important in this game , probably in other games this kind of addition wouldnt matter , but we have to take care of the balance in minecraft , it is more important that what you think.
You are now defending RPG stuff in minecraft , but believe , if it gets added to the vanilla , you will start complaining about it being like an RPG.
You want that because you dont have it and you think it will be better , but it will not .
It is changing the genre of the game.
The Minecraft I have got used to playing is a sandbox game - the "new" Minecraft is turning RPG awfully quickly.
Sure, people will eventually get used to the RPG elements and it will change the game for the better, I guess.
It would be like CoD changing to a puzzle game. There would still be a fan base for the game, people would just be a little pissed off - but they would still buy it. Same with Minecraft, people will still stick to it, but they are entitled to have an opinion about the game.
No, just no, THE ELEMENTS ADDED ARENOT TURNING MINECRAFT INTO AN RPG, IF ANYTHING THEY PUT MINECRAFT FURTHER INTO THE SANDBOX GENRE, The core gameplay remains as "Get resources, do things with them"
As for your CoD comparison, it would be as if there were more objective based game modes added.
The caps lock and large print are to emphisise my points, and I apologize in advance for this.
ALso , i would like if you added this to the list of Resons against :
- Because it is uneeded , want to jump higher ? , sprint , want to run faster , sprint , want to deal more damage , get better weapons , want to destroy blocks faster , get better weapons.
- It would be unbalanced
- Most people dislike it , including the developers.
If you are so kind to add these to the list i will be happy.

Wrong, "balance" only matters in a pvp setting.
Minecraft is about doing whatever the hell you want, so is someone wants to find ways of bettering their Steve, let them, you don't have to, and so, you can enjoy playing survivalist style.

RPG elements like those mentioned by a lot of people ( skills and such ) is a personal preference , and a lot of people dont like it , including notch , jeb , etc. , if they like it , i don thave nothing against it , but they could use mods or plugins for their server and play the way they want , nothing wrong with that.
But the vanilla game needs to stay balanced , im not saying it will ruin the game , i have RPG mods in my 1.8 , and as much as i love that kind of playing , it wont fit for minecraft , they have to think in a more general public , not only some people , that like RPGs , they have to make the game for everyone.

But if Notch adds dragons to the main world or adds skills/tallents I won't be satisfied.

Then find and build resources, and let those of us who enjoy doing a variety of things to do so
