Minecraft was an easy enough game to begin with, but now it's gotten even easier with potions. Even before, with enough patience, you could kill most mobs in the game with your bare fists. With a diamond sword, iron armor, and a bow, you were pretty much god. But now, it gets even easier with potions that buff your attacks, increase your speed, allow you to entirely avoid fire damage, and etc. Most things die with two hits from a diamond sword, why do we need to buff that?
Minecraft was simply building, now we have potions that let us jump higher, potions that let us run faster, all this non-sense (in my opinion). Again, why do we need all this?
Not to mention how this will effect PvP servers, this isn't balanced at all for SMP!
Minecraft is easy when you can create one of those epic and huge buildings....
Without using any mods, commands, third-party programs, and be on hardcore mode.
Of course it will be an option! See, technically 'over 1000 potions' isn't true, though it sort of is.
For instance: Mix these two items and you get healing 1 and weakness 2. Mix three items in a different order and you ALSO get healing 1 and weakness 2, but the data values are different and they don't count as the same potion. Plus you could have an only healing potion, only BAD side potion, or any mix of ANY of the very small amount of effects. It's not like there is a "teleport from the nether" potion, or a "summon chicken", "god mode", "immune to creepers" "turn into a dragon" etc. etc. to infinity of different potions.
:smile.gif: The effects--the like, what, ten or so effects ARE the potions, they can just be mixed and matched. That means MOST of the potions actually hurt you, there are very few that will do you any good at all, and they will be HARD to make! You don't need any of them--you already play without them, you know? I personally never use redstone or tnt or armor. They could make my life easier but what a hassle! I don't have time for that. Same can go for potions. :biggrin.gif: I doubt i will use them much(I am a hoarder who hates using my items) though I may bring a few for those horrible moments deep in the ground where you bug into lava!
If by "easy" you mean when you have to tedioiusly mine 12 obsidian blocks down near some dangerous lava, then go to Hell and kill those ****ing blazes to get ONE blaze rod to make a stand, and then you have to make a ****load of bottles out of glass to get some water, then get glowstone, redstone, and netherwarts just for bloody base ingredients, then you have to wait 3 minutes just for one ingredient to get into three bottles of water, then yeah it's really really easy.
How is it not an option to not use them? Is someone forcing them down your throat? No, they aren't. If you don't like them, don't use them. End of story, end of thread.
Okay, so you have to get to the Nether before you can even have the option available. Then you have to get more materials from the Nether. By then, you will need the potions to be strong enough to survive in the Ender, which is swarming with both endermen an an edner dragon. You're going to need them, and I don't see at all why they should be nerfed when received so far into the game.
okay, so it will make the game easy, and even though you don't have to ever create a potion stand, its still going to make the game easy? for who, you, or other people? You shouldn't worry about what other people are doing in the game, if they want to use potions, they can.
I keep getting this feeling that people don't like something, and would rather it not be available for anyone to use as opposed to simply not using it themselves.
I have been using Strength potions in the Nether, and I have to say I am not overly impressed with the damage bonus. I am not upset or want it buffed, but its just not as big as its made out to be, even Strength 2.
The Swiftness potions are awesome, helps me cover quite a lot of ground when looking for a new village.
The negative potions are useless at the moment.
Haven't made any health potions yet, havent really had the need to.
If there's really going to be over 1000 potions, I don't think that'll be an option.
I don't see there being 2000 plus potions means you can't avoid using them. No matter how many there are they won't come into existence in your world until you craft them, so don't. And they don't make it too much easier in terms of damage to enemies. In case you haven't noticed the HP of enemies has increased. (to give the potions more of a purpose and balance them a little)

Words to live by.
I tried to brew myself a strength and fire resistance potion. It took me a LOT of work and a LONG time legit.
It took me about a half hour after I got to the Nether to gather the necessary materials to make strength potions. I saw some magma cubes, but I didn't bother to kill them, since I was under siege by about 5 blazes.
That said, I don't think potions are particularly unbalanced.

I'm 100% sure the're will be an option in servers to turn potions off...
You you really want you can just turn the nether off, thus eliminating the use of potions...

How is it still not an option to avoid using the potions if there are over 1000 of them?
You can choose to use them or choose to ignore them. You will most likely be able to mod them out of your minecraft if you so desire as well.
The game will get easier... but only if the end user wishes to use those convenience items.
I don't understand how having more optional ways to play in the game can be a bad thing.
[Also, if it truly irks you that much you can A) Not let Minecraft update or B ) use MCNostalgia to roll back to an earlier version]
Bat Solo.
Exactly. It's not like potions let you automatically win either.

You need blaze rods before you can even START. That's in the nether.
Ergo, by the time you get the potions, all that's left to do is the Strongholds and Ender, both very hard places.
As for SMP...Yeah, I can see the issue. No idea how to fix that.
