Gradually randomizing the landscape is a griefer stunt, not the act of a game designer.
Notch admitted it was a "horrible idea." Then he KEPT this horrible idea, probably in a futile effort to convince someone (himself?) it was really OK all along.
It's STUPID. Because it serves NO positive purpose whatsoever and has unavoidable, inevitable, negative effects.
It's a "feature" I'll be removing from all aspects of the game, although while things are in flux I haven't bothered. Meanwhile I have spent significant time dealing with its unending impact on my otherwise constructive efforts.
Uh... They nerfed that ability to oblivion. Endermen can only pick up, like... Dirt, sand and gravel.
(I know that's not completely accurate, but close enough.)
Dirt, as the best example, is practically EVERYWHERE. Endermen gradually turn it into something that resembles the organization of bedrock. It's STUPID.

Thank god the OP is a psychologist with the ability to properly psychoanalyze Notch and his reasonings for such actions.
I like it. Mobs actually interacting with the environment is cool. When I see there little path of destruction it actually makes me laugh. I'd actually like it if they built geometric structures like notch said they were going to because that would be awesome.
I agree, the only point would have been if they could move the exact opposite blocks of the ones they do.
But this would only serve to **** off the OP even more. :tongue.gif:
Realistically, Endermen can't damage the landscape to any significant degree.
They pick up and place blocks ridiculously slowly, and one at a time, to boot.
The landscape will be more altered by Creepers, to be honest.
Don't mistake my annoyance with the block-moving feature as a TOTAL attitude problem. Endermen are fun to have around in other respects, I actually like to fight them. It's cool that they're so elusive. Every pearl is a treasure because it's so hard-won.
The one (and only) time an Enderman's block-moving made me smile was when I emerged from underground to find that one had placed a block against a fence inside a large animal pen. Half the animals had escaped! I don't mind a game that throws you some curves.
But just randomizing the landscape for no reason is, I'll say it again, STUPID.

lol I know it would, but I think it's idiotic that they **** up the landscape, I wanted them to be some form of threat, so speed up their destruction of player blocks, make it exclusive, make them hoard the blocks, make them also repellable with some item however, so you have a way to defend yourself, add instead of subtract.
as an aside, I totally support them not moving tree trunks, it makes trees ugly x]
It's certainly not as simple a task to kill them as any other mob. Most of my encounters with them have been with water nearby, which I think they often teleport into and it causes them to quit the fight; and then usually teleport off to who-knows-where.
Aren't enemy mobs supposed to do things that you don't appreciate, like how Creepers blow you up?
Otherwise, they wouldn't be enemies, they would just be tall, dark and handsome mobs with no gimmicks.
Right. EXACTLY. That's my complaint. I don't have any OTHER complaint. At the moment. :-)
Yup, and I agree, them being able to attack the landscape over player blocks makes the entire mechanic just one of making the world ugly as hell, it serves no purpose, hopefully mods make up for any slack in development, it's really not -horrible- in my 1.9pr2 hardcore world, I can certainly see it, especially in the caves but it's completely unbearable, but on smp I'd imagine it progressing into ugly quick.

Yep. It's the long term effect that really will become a problem.
In my case I've sculpted the landscape to a considerable degree around my main "home" area. Every missing or misplaced block is a mild annoyance. It's more than mild if I spend a few hours in-game but idle (afk), as I've done a couple times. Blocks are moved around at a net rate of something like one per 2 or 3 minutes across an extended area.
I have no idea what may be going on underground in as-yet unexplored caves, but it can't be good.

I assume my hardcore world will thus be less of an annoyance, I will eventually fall in lava somewhere along the line, even if I don't go to the nether like I was planning x]
Now, that WOULD be fun. Something with a purpose or pattern makes sense. Or say, they grab blocks and throw them when in a fight (in which case why not just about ANY block?).
But random randomizing of the whole surface playing field? No way.
edit: And FWIW, the terrain isn't random. It has randomness, yes, but follows forms and patterns that shouldn't be wrecked.

Yeah, and in hardcore (haven't played it yet) I would expect to be on the move a lot, challenging the game to kill me, moving among biomes, etc.

haha I bunker down without exploring AT ALL xD
first biome I'm in is where I build a house, usually out of wood at first, upgrading to cobble as time goes on, I'll spend days in the mines and leave at night killing scores of enemies on my way back home, quite a bit of fun can be had near base x]
The biggest problem with Notch nerfing the Endermen is that it encourages the complainers to be even more obnoxious. They know if they ***** and gripe loud enough, theres a chance Notch might actually change the feature they don't like.

He already did. >.>
Endermen can only pick up these blocks, as of the most recent version:
Dirt
Grass
Sand
Gravel
Mycelium
Clay (not bricks)
Both Flowers
Both Mushrooms
Melons
Pumpkins
Cacti
T.N.T.

Wake up, Notch.
Sorry, but give me a break, it's a common error. Sometimes in a desperate attempt to understand irrational things, people try to find a logical cause.

They should make geometric shapes and/or pillars from the blocks, and target an area around there depository, ie level it out.
