Honestly it's sometimes just luck. I was in a cave, and BAM! I found a mine-shaft. With that, good luck finding a Stronghold. I haven't seen one in my Minecraft worlds.
I'm working with my friend on a creative server (building stuff to make it into a rp-server) and we talk with each other while playing Minecraft via Skype. Well, my friend is working on a underground maze like construction and all of the sudden he began to cheer. I was like O_o WTF is happening???!!! And you never quess, he found a abandoned mineshaft and a stronghold :tongue.gif:
There was a tool I found somewhere on the forum the other day, I forget what it was called, but basically you typed in your seed and starting location, and it would give you the coordinates for strongholds and villages within 3000 blocks from you with fairly accurate results.
If you don't want to go that far, I guess you could always just dig around or explore caves. Of course, all the mineshafts I've ever found were because I wasn't paying attention to where I was walking and fell in.
Strongholds are rare so I have no idea.
MINESHAFTS on the other hand are super common.
I find them everywhere if you find a nice deep cave there is a good chance there is a mineshaft somewhere in it.
or if your out over the water you can sometimes find holes on the sea floor where the mineshaft spawned in(easier to find at night coz of the mineshaft torches).
Are strongholds obvious when you find one? I mean is there always a entrance above ground to them? I've had no luck finding one yet.
Some times they are, but probably most often they are not. The ones I've seen personally have so far been completely below the surface with no sign of them being there from above ground.
Strongholds are just rare in general, there are only 1-3 per map, and considering the size of a map, good luck finding one. Mineshafts are somewhat difficult. Look for them at the bottom of ravines :biggrin.gif:

I actually have found a stronghold but I used a map program to look underground for them, and I never would have found it without it. They are really cool though. I found 2 apples in a chest.
Apparently still only 3 strongholds per world in 1.9 pre-release, and all within 1k blocks of spawn.
There's supposed to be infinite in 1.9 actual release, something like 1 stronghold per 10k blocks.
Really sucks that there's a limit of 3 right now tho, any already generated worlds are likely to have already generated well beyond 1k blocks of spawn and as such don't get strongholds with the limit of 3.

The only reason you'd be generated 1k blocks beyond the spawn is if you've been exploring. If you're worried about it, don't go too far from the spawn point or just plan on starting a new map for the next version.
As for how to find them, the only ones I've found "legit" in the game I've just happened across when exploring caves or digging out underground areas for other uses.
Other ways to locate them include:
- Start a map using the same seed in Creative mode. This makes it faster and easier to dig and locate. Note your coordinates and then you can go right to the spot in your Survival map.
- Use a tool like MCEdit to look at your actual map data.
- Get a mod which lets you see through blocks, or something similar, to make it easier to locate under ground systems.
But if you don't want to "cheat" at all, there really isn't much method to finding them. Explore all the caves you can find within a thousand meters of the spawn point. If you still come up empty, you might get lucky by digging vertical shafts down to the bedrock level in random locations.

I've had my main map for a year, staying in 1k of spawn would be crazy in that time. I've been out 10k in most directions. And the games development has been great so far about making old worlds just as good (just need to explore out new ways and generate new terrain for new features).
Every other feature in the game can be generated in newly generated lands, and given that the world is practically infinite, there's no reason for the strongholds to be any different, or for the player to stay within 1k of spawn.
Beyond getting strongholds in old worlds, it's also important that the lands beyond the 1k area not be any less impressive, and they would be less impressive if you had no chance of finding strongholds beyond them, the same way it'd be bad if dungeons, villages, mushroom biomes, or other special features could only generate within 1k of spawn.
Not to mention that currently after you've explored all 3 fully there's no more strongholds to explore and conquer. That makes the world get used up in a way.
The current limit of 3 is only temporary tho, so it's not a big deal. It will be nice when the limit of 3 is removed tho.
