As many of you have noticed, in the new 1.9 pre-release 2 they added the new feature for the golden apple (gives you 30 seconds of health regeneration or something). But this got me thinking, if i can only get apples from luck out of a dungeon chest why would i care about this. So what I am asking you fellow forum members is should notch or jeb add a way to put apple trees into the game?
If apples are going to be a food source, it seems a no-brainer to put apple trees into the game, though how you'd harvest them and or how they'd manifest is a tricky one.
I don't see why not. The fastest cheapest way to get them would be an apple tree and a Zombie Pigman Farm in the Nether, and you need 648 nuggets to get a single Golden Apple.

Maybe you could use the shears or something to cut the apples down lol. I'd like to see this implemented as well, because it's odd to have millions of trees only to find apples hiding in dungeon chests.
As well as those coco beans. Either that, or just take out cookie all together. Since it's less practical than all other food source and it's too hard to get.

that would be a good way to get them to start off your planting.

yes that's something else that they could find another way to implement it in the game.
Well I think that right now the point for both of them are like trophy items.

This is what I want to see. Cocoa beans should be farmable. You Plant them in tilled dirt to get a plant that produces more cocoa beans, and then you roast the cocoa beans to get brown dye, or use them as is in crafting recipes for cookies.
Apple trees should not be naturally generated, instead once you find an apple in a dungeon(like finding melon seeds) you craft a single apple into one seed. Plant that seed in tilled dirt and it grows into an apple tree sapling, which eventually grows into a full apple tree, which drops more apples when you chop it down.

i absolutely love your thinking behind this, its probably better like that.

Trees should have more to offer than they have been doing so far. I've seen mods do it, so I'm sure Notch &Co could add something other than saplings as a drop from tree foliage. The classic tree can drop a red apple in mixed/temperate forests and cocoa beans in tropical forests; a Coconut Palm style tree could be added to Ocean biome, to drop coconuts of course; the pine trees could drop Pine Nuts.

well i can see were your coming from with this, but it would be nice to have as many options for food as possible.

First there was foraging, then hunting, then farming, then ranching.
Have them be rare
Have them so if u hit them, apples have a chance of dropping
Also, we need rice ._.
