after 1.8 and my new computer
I convinced myself I wouldn't use any mods anymore
since minecraft was really fun again
but now I will probably look for a mod as soon as it's available to disappear the potions from the game
seriously what are they thinking up there at mojang?
They're thinking that heaps of people will enjoy the addition of potions and enchantments to the game. And since an overwhelming majority of people do enjoy them, they clearly know what they are doing.

Why, what are you thinking?
I'm thinking "hopefully there is a mod to eliminate potions all together"
but seriously though.. if they are not needed I won't have a problem with them.
Just find this soon to be new addition to the game quite not to MY taste

I think what he was asking was, do you have some kind of reason for feeling that way?
Think about it- you already seem to enjoy crafting weapons, armor, food, and other items. Potions really aren't any different than crafting food or other items right now, just with different ingredients and recipes. They work basically just like food, but have more effects than just healing.
So are you opposed to having more options? Or is it something specific with the not-yet-released and not-yet-complete brewing/enchantment system itself?
And where did the comment about them "being needed" come from? Why would they possible be something you HAVE to use? Right now the only thing you HAVE to have is food, but you don't seem upset about that at all.
I'm not bashing on your post, but honestly it sounds like you're inventing things to get worried about, and complaining for no other purpose but to complain. Really, what exactly IS it that is bothering you so much about the idea?
WOOO Nelly OP you are getting ahead of the game here, complaining about something that ISN'T EVEN INGAME YET. You are so ahead of the curve, you might as well be the envy of all the breeding haters. :biggrin.gif:
I've been saying this for a long time. What you are seeing is the plague of any MMO,that is to say trhe boring grind that consumes your life. We are headed in that direction now.
Yeah but if I recall correctly, everything you say is patently wrong, so that means we are headed for THE MOST AWESOME GAME EVER.
Yes because Minecraft is all about realism, I go outside everyday and punch trees :/ I hate the realism excuse with a passion.
This may too complicated of an idea for you to realize, but when people say realism they mean verisimilitude, but see, most people don't even know that word exists so they use the best word they can think of. You probably didn't know the word existed either, so you have no room to be throwing around insults, which leaves two possibilities:
1. Either you are as ignorant as they are but more aggressive about it, or
2, you truly do not grasp the concept that verisimilitude explains, in which case all they are lacking is explanation, and what you are lacking is brains.

there we go again.
"the boring grind that consumes your life" If you don't like grinding, you won't play the game so there is no "lifeconsuming" only if you WANT to do a boring grind.
How are we headed in that direction? or are you saying it is hard to fill up the XP bar in current day MC? I've been seeing that thing ping full so many times I wish I could spend it on something already.
If you find that the "grind" to kill mobs is to much of a bother allow me to enlighten you. In order to create even the smallest of castles you'll have to "grind" at least one minecraft day worth of cobblestone. Also you have to Wait one or two MC days for trees to grow in order to create wood and planks.
Yes you can use creative mode to build that will negate the grind, but that mode is unaffected by enchants is it not?

Bgbba you really like to keep dancing around the potion/enchantments topics foretelling the next apocalypse. I understand the need for it from your perspective (I think?) but please read up on the things you are commenting about. There are tweets and blogposts from notch literally years back detailing these changes. Chill out and see what happens rather then flamebaiting half the trolls on this forum
It's my hope that there are uses for experience outside of just enchanting.
I recall it being said that the XP system was to reward exploration and add a significant penalty to death, making you start all over again. But where is the "penalty" and "starting again" when you can just pump your XP into items? It doesn't matter if you die then, you already spent your XP, you can just go collect your enchanted item where you died.
If they are going to be used as currency then they aren't technically levels. Levels implies a tiers system while experience points are considered a currency.
Levels are considered to be in the game as the experience points reset after a certain amount is gained -- suggesting possible tiers.
So... That is pretty good evidence through mechanics that they would be for statistical character development instead of currency for enchantment on weaponry.
However, if the system is scripted like a counter and not a tier identifier then I would agree with you because it fits a more currency-based form.
But the general assumption was that the tier elements solidified the use of character development.
As far as I know, there never were 'levels' from the Mojang team, that's just what the playerbase assumed. The XP bar used to have 'skill points' as the text over the bar, and there was never a 'leveling' interface - not even a framework one to show current level even if it wasn't practically used for anything. I'm 99% sure that 'levels' won't exist.
Notch has already come out and said how enchanting works: you spend skill points on the enchantment, with more points for a more powerful enchantment. He hasn't said if skill points will be used for anything else, though there have been hints at skills themselves.

for one the words he said was you'd spend xp, now it doesn't seem like that was entirely accurate but he did never say the words you claim. vague specifics could mean anything.
I agree on the levels probably not existing though, and I don't see why people are so upset about it, skills of some sort will likely exist, but they don't need levels, one could easily say their level=AccumulatedSkillPoints/3 but it doesn't change anything. You're still using xp to influence character growth, just like you use your mining skills to get better items, character and item growth are one and the same in minecraft.
Personally, I'm hoping that enchanting stuff makes things go really weird.
For example, a "Pick of Midas" which changes any natural stone block it hits into gold ore.
Or maybe "Frosty's Shovel" which takes no damage when shovelling show.
Or perhaps the "Necromancer's Blade" which kills zombies in one hit and turns any other creature you hit with it into a zombie.
Maybe even "Neptune's Fishing Pole" which causes a water block to spawn anywhere the hook lands.
I mean, if we're going to enchant, let's have fun.
I think the main problem that people consider, that its really weird that experience points / character levels will be used for item enchantments... Which seems bizzare, in comparison to our traditional understanding of what experience is...
That's why I have decided to call them Spirit orbs/ Spirit levels... Using the collected spiritual powers as a source of power for enchantments.... yeah... That sounds slightly more logical for me.
But other than that, I think it's a great idea, considering the potential multiplayer problems it would cause, if notch used a more 'traditional' character leveling system.

if people are upset with names they should say that, though most probably don't understand why they're so upset in the first place lol but from a gameplay perspective this makes 100% perfect sense, your characters gain a currency and when they have enough they can upgrade, not unusual, not uncommon, calling it enchantment, calling it xp, if those are the problems people really get hung up more on a few words than gameplay.
I'm pleased it's not used for levelling up. If RPG elements involving combat were to be introduced, it'd kill combat in minecraft for me. Who wins in a fight should be determined by skill and equipment, not by who spent longer grinding enemies in a dungeon.
Who says experience will only be acquired from killing? For we know, there might eventually be tons of ways to get it, making the currency issue less tedious.
...# of blocks traveled
...points for crafting higher tiered items (e.g. bookshelves, stone bricks, bricks, cake, pistons)
...points for mining rarer ores
...# of crops farmed
...# of blocks traveled underwater, on a boat, etc.
Some of them might be 0.1 points apiece but it could work.

I hope you're trolling... the mod to 'disappear' potions is you not making them friend.
