I love the idea of breeding animals, but with no limit, no baby animals that need a few days to grow, it's just making the game too easy. To the point where all the work Notch put into the hunger mechanic is now rendered utterly pointless!
We will never go hungry, ever..
Growing wheat is renewable and with a small farm you still get a ton of wheat, about 30-40 wheat from a rather small quickly built farm.
2 wheat = 1 new animal
40 wheat = 20 new animals
Let's assume we start with 2 animals in our pen, and always keep them alive, for the sake of this argument they will not be counted. (lucky buggers!)
So basically at any point when you need food, leather, feathers or wool, you can instantly get 20 new animals as fast as you can click!
Keeping in mind that cows often drop 2 food and 1 leather (low estimate);
As fast as you can click, in less than 5 minutes no doubt, you can instantly have 40 free food and 20 leather.
Or 40-60 wool if you breed sheep and shear them.
Now, i love this breeding, but it is rendering the hunger bar utterly pointless. If we will never go hungry, what is the point of a hunger bar? I do not get it.
The end result is that in essence, in the core gameplay essence, this is the exact same as if you would just cheat-spawn food directly in your hands. Less tedium, same end effect. Free food & stuff for no effort.
At least respawning animals in previous versions took time, and if you needed more fast, you had to explore a little.
This is just, insta-free-stuff. What is the point?
And what is the point of hardcore mode then?
You'll ALWAYS have regenerating health in hardcore mode, since you will NEVER run out of food.
Where's the hilarious panic and omg-im-starving gameplay? It won't exist.
It just reminds me too much of the health orb drops in Diablo 3. Same problem, different games.
He makes the hunger bar, people complain about how they don't want to be hungry. He makes food easier to get, people complain that it's too easy to not be hungry.
obviously you cant see how incredably broken food is right now
mooshroom + bowl = endless mushroom soup
and the breeding is just as bad for producing silly amounts of food quickly
Wheat farm = endless supply of bread.
So what's your point? I mean, what, let's make it so you have to eat a whole farm to regain one point of Hunger? Do YOU got any suggestions on how to fix it?
This and the ability to quite literally dupe mushrooms really bother me, I love the idea of food, but not when it's made so damn irrelevant, it defeats the purpose and turns it into just the chore that people who complained about the food bar always claimed it was, it's neither hard nor requiring any skill, it's something Maybe they should leave in on easy but hard/hardcore at least need to contain some challenge besides lava...
This is such a bizarre system anyway. What if two tamed animals of the same species were within a few open blocks of each other, every _ ticks there is a 1 in _ chance they will bread. Now we loose the click and mate mechanic and have plenty or room to balance it by adjusting the numbers. It leaves some to chance, is far more believable frankly, and requires you to have quite a large heard of animals if you want tons of food.
I remember when people suggested a shepherd staff or something along the lines of. In my opinion, it works much better than having to just grow enough wheat to sustain yourself.
There are many, many ways to get food, even before breeding. A stack of cooked beef lasts for days. Mushrooms are insanely abundant. You are overreacting.
even without breeding, foods already so abundant... I wish there is a 'toggle real life issues here' button for hardcore mode like famine (farm plants failing) and daylight creatures that slaughter + eat the animals (like mo's creatures but eliminate the drops).
OMG!!
I cant stand those complain
Complain that food is hard to find because animal spawn rarely
Now include breeding say it is TOO easy to get food
Then wat you all want??
Why not an empty world with no animal and make a man-made food???!
3 wheat becomes 1 bread for no effort, which is 2.5 hunger, or 0.833 hunger per wheat
2 wheat becomes 0-2 porkchops for some effort (collecting 2 pigs and building an enclosure for them), which is average of 1 raw porkchop, which give 1.5 hunger, or 0.75 hunger per wheat
So breeding pigs is actually wasteful under the current system, because you get better output from just making bread and without any effort.
Cooking the porkchops is an extra part that isn't what the breeding itself gives you, and costs 1/8th a coal per porkchop and time, but raises the value to 4 hunger each, or 2 hunger per wheat.
So breeding isn't the thing causing problems, it's cooking that disproportionately increases the value of wheat heh.
Cows have a better ratio than pigs, but it's really just enough to make it worthwhile as far as raw meat goes.
I don't understand when people suggest feeding them tons of wheat, or bales of hay that take 9 wheat. That amount of wheat would make breeding animals a waste of resources and time.
As it stands now, breeding is only worthwhile because you can cook meat increasing its value, but the breeding itself only provides raw meat, typically at a loss of hunger compared to wheat, yet you have to do more to get it.
We do need baby animals tho, they'll be fun in general and add a time investment. And we shouldn't have to feed them, just have them on grass blocks, all the other animals are able to survive without human intervention so I don't see any reason for us to have to waste more effort and wheat to keep them going.

Your limit is the amount of time it takes to grow your wheat, also i dont belive it wont be balanced out any-time soon.
I like this for multiple reasons
-i can be a true farmer
-SHEEP ORGY
-less whiners whining about hunger :biggrin.gif:
You guys are never satisfied, are you. Just DONT BREED ANIMALS if you think its too easy. DONT MAKE GIANT MUSHROOMS if you think its too easy to get food. Its that simple. You dont need to make ANOTHER complaint thread.
way I look at is, farming limits you to an area which cuts off your exploring but makes things easier in the long run, and when you do explore you are limited to that farm area(unless you start a new) You can be nomadic and just get your food on the run. Or be a farmer and stay put. Options I guess.
Sure it could use some balancing but regardless its interesting none the less and people need to constructively criticize In order for Notch to make the changes. which usually when someone complains mindlessly there are usually a few more people giving well thought out complaints.
Lastly in my opinion, food has never been hard to get.
To be honest, food has never been an issue in Minecraft. Anyone can take a few minutes each day and end up with a glut of food for their trouble. I've never had issues with it. So saying it makes the hunger bar useless is a silly argument because, if you have any thought towards keeping yourself properly equipped(which you should), that's hardly an issue at all.
Does it need to be fixed? Yes. But to say it makes the hunger bar useless is silly.
The hunger bar was pretty impotent to begin with. All the whining just made it seem alot worse than it was.
And of course it's easy to get food once you have a farm. Think about it, a lot of people in the real world who live out in rural areas use farms solely for their source of food.
And you are but one man, with ALL THE FOOD IN THE WORLD to reap for your consumption alone. I'd personally be embarrassed if I died of hunger.
Yeah, for all the complaints, Food has always been pretty simple to get, but I think instead of making food harder to get (Though, Mushroom Blocks should probably not drop so many mushrooms, and breeding shouldn't be as quick).
Hunger needs to decrease faster when doing stuff, and maybe make one item fill less hunger? The default for most seems to be three hunger points, maybe that should be tweaked.
We will never go hungry, ever..

This forum depresses me.

It gets a result.
Make the animals refuse food if they just ate/bred. Simple. It'll now take 20 times longer to breed animals, and get the food.

It is made for people to offer CONSTRUCTIVE USEFUL COMPLAINTS.
Pointing out the obvious is neither constructive nor useful.
This is an incomplete mechanic and Notch and Jeb have already discussed modifying it. Don't worry folks, it'll be fine eventually :3
