I have not yet played 1.9 but this gives me ideas for an automated chicken coup:
1) Build a daily clock (I saw one based on grass growth in the Redstone subforum). It outputs a signal during the transition from day/night/day.
2) Build the chicken coup with 2 areas to it: a growth area and a killing area.
3) Use lava to kill the chickens that wander into the killing area. Cooked chicken, yummm.
4) Use water to deliver items like eggs and chicken meat to a collection point.
5) Use a dispenser filled with wheat attached to daily feed.
6) Also attach a music block to the daily clock output, to remind me to collect the goodies.
Build similar devices (tweaked for the species) for my other farm animals.
