Gold pieces are, in fact, more time-consuming and rare to get than golden ingots.
Here's why. Pieces:
-You must create a Nether portal, already a time-consuming task
-You must hunt and kill PigZombies, possibly having to travel across whole lava oceans to get to them.
-There's only a *chance* that the PigZombies will drop a gold piece, and no more than one. Ingots:
-You must locate the correct depth level needed to find gold.
-You must spend a bit of time searching for the ore itself.
-You must cautiously stay away from lava lakes or streams.
-One could collect obsidian for a Nether portal while mining for gold. Test:
I'd allocated myself 1 hour with friends to test this. We each started a fresh survival map in SSP with the sole goal of collecting gold ingots/pieces.
By the time the hour was up, I'd retrieved only 24 pieces compared to a stunning 43 ingots while mining. Conclusion:
Gold ingots are in fact less time-consuming and dangerous to retrieve than gold pieces.
Why not make PigZombies drop *muliple* gold pieces with a chance to drop at least 1?
My assumption has been that the nuggets are just something extra. Do the pigmen not still drop porkchops or rotten flesh?
While the nuggets may be less gold per hour, I'm not aware of any way to break ingots into nuggets, so the pigmen are the best and only source of nuggets. The nuggets may have unique undeveloped uses.

Well , mining will give you more , but its limited , sometime there wont be more gold , or probably there will be more , but the world is just too big.
But in the nether , we know we can have INFINITE ingots , but it will take some time , we will have to kill pigmen and stuff , killing a single zombie pigman is easy , the problem is when 20 Nearby zombie pigmen come for you for revenge , if you see it , you can have a never-ending supply of gold.
While , the generation is just random ,t here could be a seed without a single gold ore block , the chance of a pigmen dropping the gold little thing is also random , but atleast we know we are going to get it.
Probably mining will give you more results , but after some time you will notice that you cant find more , it is just gone , there is no more , obviusly there is more , but with the only mining tool we have , a pickaxe , we wont be able to explore aaaall the world , and it will take some time , a loooot of time.
PigZombies now drop nothing more than 1 rotten flesh and 1 gold piece. Both by chance.
It's incredibly time-consuming (more than 1 hour apparently) to get a single gold block from gold pieces.
That said, as gold pieces are only 1/9 of a single ingot, shouldn't pieces be much less rare and in fact much *more* common?
Gold nuggets are unique, though. I'm saving them as they are. Chances are, they'll receive another use.
Yeah ... I don't think their primary purpose is to be another source of gold bars. The nuggets themselves will have use(s), I don't see any reason to change drop rates on an item we don't know the primary purpose for yet.

I think the nugget system, as is, is designed for those who like to build farms. Killing pigmen individually for gold nuggets is a waste, whereas an efficient farm will make you a very rich man in a hurry. I have no objections to this, as having to build in the nether gives added challenge. Perhaps gold will also be very valuable to the NPCs.
I already do so in the humble city of Rivertown :happy.gif:
As to farms.. It wouldn't be viable.
Unless you plan to cover the entire Nether in PigZombie traps and check them regularly, a farm simply doesn't work.
(In fact, it'd waste more time and resources than it would output)

That depends on how useful gold becomes in the long run and how efficient the system is. If it's the only currency accepted by villagers, I'm sure there's a lot of value in it. Also, farms don't have to be intimidating; if you've got experience, you could knock one out in half an hour, and get a substantial return even if you only get one ingot per minute, since you can work on other projects in the Nether while the farm runs. If your goal is to get whatever the villagers have, and gold is the only way to do it, it might be a better investment than you think.

The only reason it wouldn't be viable is because there's no legitimate way to get water in the nether.
it may be less efficient but it's renewable, so I'm not sure what you're upset about. I'm fine with them being rare, and I expect they may have another use soon; or iron ingots will; appropriate to that rarity.

Good point, but there are designs that don't require water, only pistons. They simply won't all fall in the same place.
can you use lava to canals instead of water?
