So I found a cute little village about a day's hike from my spawn. It needed some love; i.e. fixing the gravel paths, rearranging some doors and windows, and of course I had to build a little fortress there so I could watch over my little farmers and librarians.
As I worked, over the course of a minecraft week, I watched two of them slowly wander west, where they eventually worked themselves deep underground. No amount of coaxing could lead them out. Not even a straight, double wide staircase straight to the surface. So I killed them. I'm brutal when sufficiently annoyed.
The rest of the crew wandered east, into the swamps. I let them be, and continued building. Several days later, when I went to look for them, all but one had completely disappeared. The lone survivor had almost made his way back to my spawn point, but there was a hill in the way, and poor Testificate just doesn't know how to jump properly. Perhaps if he communed with Nature a bit and watched the 2,000 sheep on the hill around him, he could've stopped by my spawn house for a visit!
What happened to the others? I'll go south next to see if they ventured into the desert. But now, my gorgeous little town, with its grand fortress perched on a hill of solid stone, feels very, very lonely.
I've posted signs at the entrances of the town with its new name:
This is already happening to a village I found... I've got Testi's stuck in pits, ponds, traveling under the earth. The release probably needs to include some kind of restraining bolt for them.

cool story.... no seriously, it entretained me a lot :biggrin.gif:

I'd love to see the "restraining bolt" concept implemented! Preferably to their individual houses... And give them the ability to open wooden doors. JUST wooden doors, mind you. I don't need the little buggers operating redstone devices.

Bravo! I might have to build a big gate, before the official release in the village I have found, and then a tower to watch over them, so they don't wander off
I wasn't aware that NPCs were able to wander away from the village. I would probably just build a giant wall around the village and rule over them in a militaristic theocracy (with the god in question being me, of course.)

Same thing happened to mine. I put my sign on a tree, and it said CROATOAN, though.
It's not just NPCs, though I suppose it's even more obvious there. I wish animals would have slightly better pathfinding as well. It seems like they all bolt for the nearest hole/ravine/cave that they can't get themselves out of. I didn't even have to make a pen for my cows - I've got a herd of 8 just hanging out in a stone pit near my house!

That's how my sheep are. I even built some steps for them to get out and they just won't. They keep swimming in the little pool near my house, looking stupid and being useless.
Villagers falling into a cave reminds me of this one pit I had near my house that spontaneously filled with 8 chickens and 2 pigs.
I was exploring a cave system once... I found a chicken inside. This wouldn't be remarkable if it were, say, closer to the surface. But I was well into the gold layers when I heard clucking, and just above the magma layer when I found the chicken.
Picture related: it's the area where I saw a cave chicken jump into lava.
Yeah the first NPCs i came across i noticed that 1 of them had wandered off into a nearby river. Some where locked safely away in there houses. Oh yeah and i killed one to see what happened.
But yeah I think until its fixed so that they stay near town, i am going to build a dirt wall around them. Hopefully replace the dirt with stone, make a nice gate. and expand on the village. :smile.gif:
