I found a bug, and it's a big one! I started a new world, thinking okay I'll go find some trees and start a camp somewhere. For those interested the seed Minecraft 1.9 pre beta used is this one:

Guess what? After six Minecraft days of nothing but ocean biome and a ratio of 99% water to 1% treeless land I'm about ready to toss this randomly generated world seed in favour of another.
I had initially started it in "normal" mode, expecting to be able to survive and build like you'd expect to but this is just plain ridiculous that the game will dump you in a vast ocean biome on a small treeless world. It caused me to swap over to "peaceful" mode. It even seems like Minecraft is missing opportunities to generate trees when you encounter land, the only trees I could find were a small number of trees on an island near my start location and that was after a lot of exploration with restarts using MCEdit.
When I have to use MCEdit just to find trees for wood to be able to start building a crafting bench, something is seriously wrong in Minecraft. I do not expect to be dumped into a treeless world where there is nothing but vast ocean biomes.
Notch, kindly nerf the ocean biome sizes and give us back some land with trees on it so I can actually start building something! I would even go so far as to suggest that if existing ocean biome would be a different type if the oceans were a bit smaller, that the game should automatically regenerate them.

I like the occasional Ocean biome but they do get a bit ridiculous. There's significantly less useable land than there use to be, short of draining segments of the ocean.
If a person watches the "How to Survive Your First Night" video, decides to buy Minecraft, and finds themselves in Waterworld... they're not going to be pleased. At the least they'll be confused.
It can be hard to survive on an island if you are on one without trees and you can't find a tree on the other islands. But I have been on an island since 1.8 prerelease and am doing just fine thank you.

I swapped that map over to Creative mode, where I finally found some Mooshrooms and terrain that they spawn on. What is totally unfunny about it is that there was no trees inbetween my spawn and the mushroom terrain, only vast oceans and very little island terrain at all.
I challenge anyone to beat that starting seed for a map, it even has 'Rigel' beat hands down! I like a challenge but at least give me something to work with in the beginning!
You could have just started another world if you didn't like the big ocean. Many of us do like oceans. It's not as if the huge ones are ridiculously common or anything. I've made over 100 worlds (in part because I like to see what the generator can do) and I would estimate less than 5% have a big ocean near the spawn.
That seems reasonable considering that over 70% of our planet is covered in water, and most of the world's population lives close to an ocean or sea. The game world is supposed to have a fair bit of similarity to earth, and in the past the largest bodies of water were little lakes.

More Ocean Life: Kelp, Coral, Crabs and Jellyfish; Coconut Palm trees for beaches and islands. Terrain Generation Changes: Which biomes and world-building features are most in need of change?
Actually hold on I have a world for anyone complaining MC is too easy (just made it earlier today with 1.9pre)

So far I have found two trees mostly ocean and some sparse small islands, No animals seem to spawn there. You must rely on fishing and farming to survive.
Not sure I would call it broken per say but it is definitely on the far side of the extreme scale for terrain generation.
Overall it seems to be the exception not the rule.

I agree, but I think there is a problem with spawning IN water.
or ontop of a tree
it should spawn you on sand like it used to, I love all the new terrain features, not least of which the oceans, but I don't want to start in the middle of one with no land nearby. I don't think it anywhere near breaks them game, but it delays you even starting it when you have to swim to an island in a random direction and just -hope- there's a tree or two.
I personally think the oceans are awesome. I want to build a tunnel from one continent to another. and spawning in an island makes the game a bit more difficult, i think its fun.
lol my situation is the exact opposite i get dumped into a giant ass forest every time i create a new world and maybe a lake some where but nothing but trees for a lot of blocks around XD

Other than standing in a swamp I haven't experienced any spawning in water. On top of or inside of trees is odd, and the same happens to some of the animals, that is clearly a bug.
I don't agree about the sand though - sand has generally been overused in some biomes where gravel and clay would make more logical lake/river shore material. There's no need to always spawn near water, which was what the old code effectively did, always put you next to water (or the middle of a desert).
As for the OPs seed, the only problem I see with it is that there isn't a tree on the island it spawns you on. There should always be a tree within sight of the spawn. Here's what I found in less than one day in creative mode (cursor and standing at spawn):

Even with a small amount of trees you can always make more just replant the saplings. Then before you know it you have a whole island full. I spawned on an island with about 5 trees total and used them to build up more trees. Then saved up a small amount of supplies and then built a boat and escaped Tom Hanks style.

Have to admit, that's cool. And +1 for the reference, too.
I agree with the OP, you should start with some resources to work with. But I love the extra variety we are getting; swamps, oceans, rivers, gorges... its much better than the vast forest I usually find myself in (as noted by another poster).
Took 3 hours. but I think I safely beat OP's seed.
Played hard, no deaths, Victory was to set bed spawn on proper main land.
Found a abandoned mine under ocean collected wood. set sail for dawn and after 5 days or so only found a mushroom island mid way. No trees yet. gave up and went hard to port. Found my first trees at the swamp. past the swamp was a desert, grasslands and mountains. And lo a Village. I beat the island. ending cords were

After I got the boat I saw several more lava cracks under water at night which could have lead to mines. Yet I Had got my boat and supplies, I wasn't about to explore them.
Chunks of dirt in the middle of the ocean are not impossible. Yet restarting with a new seed would have been easier if you don't like the challenge.
Well... the terrain generator is random, and with randomness there's going to be some wierd outliers that are problematic. There just needs to be some tweaking to reign it in. The terrain generator did just get a big overhaul and it works surprisingly well considering. It just has a few things that need some tweaks and changes.
One change would be to perhaps enforce a rule that an ocean biome cannot occupy more than a certain percentage of chunks near the center of the world, and that the center must contain land.

Ick. Well maybe if they have more world options when creating. designate the seed as sea heavy or land heavy. etc. I enjoy the harder low resource start. and even without a single tree for miles its still possible.

Actually you're right... crazy wierd starts like this can be fun for some people. Why bother with all that coding when people can just make a new world when they don't like what they've got.
So yeah, OP... random worlds means sometimes it's going to be a crazy hard edge case. Make a new world if it's not to your taste :smile.gif:
