I guess Millenaire has spoiled us, cause the NPC's serve no purpose (at least yet, hopefully they will...) and they look like ****ing neanderthal versions of Squidward if he turned Buddhist...
Is it just a practical joke as a filler till the real thing comes out? Cause if so (and even if not) I hardly find it funny, rather sad actually...
Most likely placeholders, I wouldn't get attached.

Stop saying they aren't place holders. Jeb did NOT say that they aren't place holders. he said that they don't plan on changing them 'Right Now'. Key words being Right and Now. Meaning for now they aren't going to change them, and that they will possibly change them in the future.
I have to say, and I never thought I'd say it, the future for Minecraft disappoints me... I was hoping for villages that expanded, thrived, traded, etc. Hopefully we can see that soon, but until then I am saddened...
I dont just want mods either... Notch and Jeb have been working on this too long to not produce any useful content... Upgraded biomes? Who gives? I like my maps when 90% of them weren't covered in an ocean biome... Mineshafts? Without any sort of intelligent layout to them, what's the point? And I'm still waiting for Notch to change collisions on fences, especially since they are now 50% of the mineshafts...

Or meaning that they didn't have plans to change them at all in the future at the time that question was asked.
Plus, why would they model a whole new mob for just a PLACEHOLDER instead of just reskinning a player model?
I may be wrong but after seeing the new google Doodle, I think the NPCs are some king of homage to Jim Henson (creator of the Muppets).
The extended noses are some kind of muppet's visual trademark:

According to google, today would be his 75th birthday... and the 1.9 was pre-reseased yesterday, I don't think this is a coincidence.

compare it with this picture:

If that's true, notch didnt do a good job, lol... I only see 3 monsters in that picture with long noses. The guy above and below Kermit, and the pink guy in the lower right corner. And the only one with an elongated head is Bert... I'd rather he pay homage by making them look like Jimmy himself.

Oh, and I want my continuous jumping back...
Yes, I think a 5 post moment of silence is needed...

I agree. Ps: just edited the post because it appears the single eyebrow is also another similarity common among muppets. Look at the one at the far left (I dont know his name)

Oh, and I forgot Gonzo.
Um... Gonzo, Animal, Rowlf, Bert, Statler, Waldorf, Beaker, Fozzie, Dr. Teeth, Floyd, Swedish Chef, and, of course, Sweetums.
Seriously, though. I couldn't care less how ugly they look, as long as they can be made prettier in the future. Functionality and versatility before aesthetics. Notch and Jeb should work on expanding and fixing features before making them look nice.

Im only pointing out the ones that hang below the mouth. A nose is a nose, but these are snouts...
I think the villagers were probably one of the most well-considered aspects of the update. I'd be surprised if Notch or Jeb were to say that they barely thought anything about the process of designing them.
People just assume that they'd be humans because villages are safe harbours and places of commerce for us. We trade there and can find shelter there if necessary. We assume that the inhabitants have enough in common with us that they'd look like us. If they look like us, we immediately feel a sense of comradery. Of community.
But they're not like us. They're clearly something quite different. We can trade with them and find some measure of safety amongst them, but we do not belong with them. Minecraft has been a game of solitude (not on servers, but server play tends to alter a lot of Minecraft gameplay). It remains that, it would seem. These villagers are stern and helpful, but never quite friendly. They are something to be visited but never to stay too long amongst. Not quite as one would if they were humans.
Maybe I'm putting more thought into this than they are. Notch, at least, seems to have thought a lot about game design. He wasn't spearheading this part of updating, if I recall, but I'd like to think that Jeb puts thought into this as well.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.

I have no doubt that Notch knows what he's doing, I'm just afraid he'll take a turn that the majority wasnt expecting, and just make the game not live up to its expectations. The mods available are amazing, and yet we have not seen nearly the same amount of productivity in vanilla (or rather, beta). Like I said I'll be happy if they have a good purpose.
I know people dont want to get their Infiminer and Minecraft and Terraria mixed together, but since all of these games are founded on the same idea i think it is both productive and smart for them to bleed together in certain aspects. For instance, as much as people hate the guide in Terraria, It would be amazing if there was a "guide" or "manager" or something to help you build a house and attract traffic, and newcomers, and eventually build a thriving metropolis. Then again I know this is a programming nightmare, however deep down I was hoping it would be something similar with these villages.

Or Jeb is just saying they're not, and Notch and him are a' trollin.

Why use a player model when you can make the NPC's unique? Just because they made something just for NPC's doesn't mean it's not a place holder.
The Fact of the matter is, your putting words in Jeb's mouth.

It's true. As long as they:
then I'll be happy. No point in having an "Adventure Update" if you cant find the damned place to start your adventure.

xD
Same. I think they sort of look like Beaker from the Muppets and I am half tempted to reskin them thus.
