Its hard to add meaningful additions without crumbling the rest of the foundation.
Add more armors (People will whine that diamond is OP, we don't need more ores ect.)
Add more things (People will whine about it being easier/difficult, i.e. Villages making things easier and Endermen making things more difficult)
Its hard to add things without disrupting the entire game itself. Now some of your points are valid, there are some things which are meaningless, but they do add novelty to the game. The wolf was not much, but it did add something which could be improved on later. Assume that all minor additions can be (further modified). In the case of mods, these little additions allow modders to improve on them. Snowmen being retooled as pillbox turrets and there could be other uses for them, we'll just have to see.
I'd wait until 1.9 Release, rather than the pre-release to start judgement. But its good to give ideas and constructive criticism.
Because it's the devs actually having a little FUN.
Frankly, I think that's a GOOD thing. More developers could learn to do that. It might produce better products at the end, if the devs really ENJOY what they're doing. This sort of design is why Minecraft got big in the FIRST place.
Mooshrooms are just a funny, goofy little bonus that probably took Notch/whoever all of 30 minutes to code, if that. They dont NEED to have a big purpose. Yet maybe they will later, who knows?
As for everything ELSE? The blaze rods, the ghast tears, enderpearls, NPCs? THEIR existence makes sense; they're currently unfinished code, but with the INTENT of being useful in an upcoming update. THis is how game development works.
I didn't mention those as being useless. But honestly, what is the biggest thing that 1.9 pre-release has done? NPCs don't look promising at all. I'm just saying, if they're going to code the game, code the necessary stuff, fix what's broken, add meaningful ****, THEN have at it with all the goofy ****.
Its a peaceful biome as well a escape from the madness, and makes a hellofa farm place.. When you can code a game of thi9s level please comeback..
What madness? Minecraft is harmless after the 10th night. And honestly, I'm so sick of the "code a game yourself" thing. If movie producer's told that to critics who didn't like their film, do you think they'd be taken seriously?
Honestly, just stay away from intelligent threads with that .
You're right! How DARE Notch and Jeb add fun little things into the game instead of stuff you want?! It's barbaric! It's wrong! DEY TOOK URR MONEEYYY!
No. They're having fun and making cool stuff while doing it. I feel I should add to the sarcastic portion of this post that you're right about how mooshrooms are pointless but we need new ores. You suggest they fix endermen, add ores, and add mobs that are "scary as hell". Seriously? Minecraft isn't a horror game. They added some unique stuff to the game. Naturally, because it's not what you wanted, you had to throw a fit on the forums. Did you ever stop to consider that some people might like the new additions? Probably not, because you're the most important customer.
No, I didn't think the update was the greatest addition to Minecraft. However, it's not even out yet, and it did add some cool stuff to the game. Maybe you don't like it, but someone does. And we don't NEED new ores.

Well how about instead of giving us pointless ****, they give us stuff that makes sense? New exciting features?
Here's my new Idea: Zombie chickens. They run around and **** in the new "Feces" biome.
Actually, the NPCs DO look promising.
Notch already explained their use (Or was it Jeb? I cant remember.)
The purpose of the NPCs is that they will enable you to trade with them, as well as producing other potential functions (thus, the different TYPES of NPCs).
This isnt a particularly new idea... ever heard of the Millenaire mod? That's a BIG mod, and a well-liked one.... and for good reason.
The NPCs that Mojang is adding seem to be along those lines, albeit a bit simpler (and simpler is not a bad thing here. Millenaire is good but maybe a little too complex in some ways). But it has alot of gameplay potential nonetheless.
It's not "goofy ****". It's things that really, honestly have an intended purpose. I dont think anyone will be able to FULLY judge a given feature like this until said feature is FULLY coded and implemented.
"goofy ****" is stuff more like the cows... but really, that probably took all of 30 minutes to code, and only happened because the guys at Mojang seem to honestly enjoy what they're doing. They just added it in real fast just because they felt like it. It didnt hurt anything, it didnt "slow development", it didnt cause them to "lose focus". It's just a cow with shrooms on. That's it. I think they're amusing, really.
Also, I know people keep going "AGH JUST FIX THE BUGS FIRST THEN ADD STUFF", but in reality, game development DOES NOT work like that. No, seriously, it doesnt. Dealing with bugs isnt as easy as most people think; and no, "but the modders can do it" is not an excuse. The modders are a bazillion forum members with alot of free time, and usually, each modder fixes like ONE or TWO bugs at a time, IF they bother at all. You'd have to install a squillion mods to fix all of the bugs, and then your game would implode.
But seriously, try out any beta for something like an MMO or.... whatever, and you'll see it's the same there. They HAVE to keep going with their design schedule.... despite that new bugs are always popping up. It's just the way it works.
And Mojang ISNT a big dev team, so it's not surprising that bugs take awhile to get fixed.
Mooshrooms are useless? I use them to get materials for mushroom stew quickly. Pre-release, so the new items right now don't have a purpose (Obviously, Notch is going to give them one).
You know, it's concerns like this that really shatter my fragile mind.
Especially since, alongside mooshrooms, this prerelease has added a number of items that will assuredly have meaning and value later, alongside a new brick type in the nether, new mobs, etc.
People have said it already, but nevertheless: it's a game in development. You're not only focusing on one small thing and isolating it as the reason for this huge concern of yours, you're failing to see the forest for the trees on a number of levels.
Mooshrooms are the first varietal version of an existing mob...something I believe Notch has wanted in the game for a while. So, consider them the beginning of a much larger feature (those being biome-based, varietal mobs across the board). Even if that ends up being mostly an aesthetic/atmospheric thing, it's still a cool feature, most (including me) would think.
Consider Snowmen as well--the first in-world activated object/mob, and all of the possibilities it potentially opens up for design of more golem-type creatures. That kind of thing.
While I'm not wholly disagreeing with the idea that Mojang's design prerogative can seem a bit all over the place at times, I'm totally disagreeing with your method of attacking said design philosophy. It's a useless, narrow-minded way to ***** about a prerelease of a beta of a game, Mr. Weast.
OP: game is in development. That should answer any problems you have with "useless content". In fact, the game doesn't even have a *goal*. How's that for useless?
What Mojang needs to do is focus on one release at a time rather than several smaller releases.
For example, spend 1-2 months perfecting strongholds, than 2-4 weeks perfecting mineshafts, etc. Rather than 3-4 months for everything and ending up with a lot more bugs than necessary.
i made an account just to say, if they fix all the bugs first and then add a bunch of new features guess what... no really guess... there will be a bunch of bugs. it's obvious they are fixing the bugs while they develop which honestly seems like the best way instead of slowing development and pushing the release date back just so they can fix(and find) every last little bug in the game then start developing again and stop just to spend time perfecting the code so the blocks don't get lighting bugs every now and then or something like that... just let mojang do there thing instead of insisting they listen to a kid that hasn't coded a thing in his life. ask for new features :biggrin.gif: and everything :biggrin.gif:.. but don't tell them how they should approach coding and fixing the game(Kanye).... mojang does a great job and this thread shouldn't even exist right now.. oh and btw.. stop crying about a per-release.. they have a bunch of bugs and unfinished features, the point of them is to find the bugs and let Mojang know about them so it can be playable and as when they release 1.9
Why does Mojang insist on adding little details on to an unfinished product? Honestly, Mooshrooms and their whole little biome are utterly useless, and don't contribute to Minecraft at all. Why not add some game changing stuff, like new ores, and mobs that are ACTUALLY scary as hell. Maybe fix Endermen before they take the time to make useless Mooshrooms.
I'm sick of this, they need to start focusing on what's important in this game, not the details.
It's like putting furniture in your new house before changing the rotted floor. It's pointless and will eventually get in the way when you're trying to finish.
They keep adding things that should be polish, that should be added once the game is bug free and essentially done, but instead of working on the foundation for this game, they make a new pointless stupid cow. 1.9 pre-release has been a big fail so far, and I'm not sure the actual 1.9 update will be much better. It's already been split into 1.9 and 1.10.
have you not been to the nether? they did add new monsters... go fight blaze and those flamming slimes

Those things dont NEED that kind of time though.
And again, dealing with bugs doesnt work the way so many seem to think.
Even if they took that approach.... the game would still end up fulla bugs.
AND, they'd get LOTS of people whining about how SLOOOOWWWWW they are and how DARE they do nothing but fix bugs!!!!11ONE

There's a lot of cool stuff shroomcows can do, in addition to being a really cool Super Mario style mob.
I'm not 10 years old, I'm not going to sit there in my fort and imagine how the cows are alien invaders from planet simpleton.
Well how about instead of giving us pointless ****, they give us stuff that makes sense? New exciting features?

PlanetSide 2 Megathread because why not?

They're not aliens, they're from the mushroom biome, duh.
Seriously, though, you really do have zero imagination if you don't see the potential in shroomcows.
For example, spend 1-2 months perfecting strongholds, than 2-4 weeks perfecting mineshafts, etc. Rather than 3-4 months for everything and ending up with a lot more bugs than necessary.
