Notch has been saying for at least a full year that he has been working toward making Minecraft into a rogue-like. If you don't know what that means, let me elucidate.
A rogue-like game is an RPG wherein a player starts a game as a class specific skills and maybe one or two starting items. Most rogue-likes have monsters of varying degrees of difficulty which mostly rely on the RNG to determine if you survive the first few levels. Most rogue-likes are hardcore with the only possibility of continuing involving resurrection items, abilities gained from worshiping certain gods, or using necromancy.
The few that are not hardcore mode all the time will mostly send you back to your spawnpoint, or the stairs at the beginning of the floor of the dungeon you are on. You may or not have a chance to recover your inventory. The most rogue-like of the mobs in Minecraft are the creepers and the Endermen. The upcoming alchemy system has the look of a rogue-like game from the screenshots that Jeb has put up. The Nether has rogue-like from its inception and has only become more so with these past few updates.
Notch has said that he likes the boss system that Terraria came up with and he might implement it. That is also very similar to many rogue-likes.
Conclusion: If you didn't pay attention, or do not want that kind of game, too bad. This is the direction Minecraft has been heading since Notch started it. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Plz made this more heard and noticed or I'm gonna go mental over all the moaning. You have just put everything I've been trying to get through to people in a couple of paragraphs.
I also want to say gaming isn like it is anymore and I'm really disappointed that gamers hav turned into moaning freak shows that can't just play a game without critising it and actually enjoy themselves. People need to learn to just enjoy the game as a hole and just STOP BEING SO FRIKIN PICKY.
It's not even that. It's whining and moaning over the game becoming exactly what it was intended to be in the first place.
If the direction survival is going isn't what someone likes, Notch gave them creative.
Also, Dwarf Fortress is one of the inspirations for Minecraft. That game is so hardcore that it redefined the meaning of the word. You build a fortress for hours on end, if you're lucky enough to last the first year. Once you get your fortress to a sustainable level where all your dwarfs are happy and your military is unmatched, one dwarf in a bad mood can set off a chain reaction that destroys the entire thing. Then, as you dig deeper into the ground to find the ores and minerals you so desperately need, you open into a cavern and unleash the Hidden Fun Stuff.
The question of when you lose DF is simply which event happens first. Whether a bad mood, unstoppable HFS, or simply you neglecting a key area of your supply chain due to gearing up for HFS, you will lose and your fortress will die.
That game is one of the inspirations for Minecraft. Think about it.
Wait.... a passive mob that fires things at enemies? (does no damage). I mean I have NEVER seen ANY mob in minecraft that fires stuff at you. I mean really what was mob smoking....
Seriously if that was a game breaker for you, just leave and go to terreria. Wait I believe the mobs there fire things as well. Your loss
You forget that Minecraft isn't a finished product, you'd probably be okay with this if it was like this when it was released at first, however, it's not final.
Notch always wanted to have more purpose in the game, more adventure. Not just only a sandbox.
If you payed attention to what notch said he wanted the game to end up being last year, you would know its not oing away from the original idea. The original idea wasn't just to be building and making impressive stuff, it was to have a way to make progress. That's exactly the direction the game has been taking the last several weeks.
The original game was creative mode...
**NEWS FLASH**
CREATIVE MODE STILL EXISTS!!!
As far as Survival mode. It has been a long time coming, but this was the end goal. There's been a lot of 'fluff' along the way, but I love and support how the game is turning out.
I know I can only speak for myself, but I cannot wait(at least very impatiently) for the finished product.

I use a mix of Dokucraft The Saga Continues and JohnSmith, and create personalized textures for both. Some of my submissions can be found in the Dokucraft Customizer located http://www.minecraft...saga-continues/
only thing i dont like about 1.9 is mushroom biomes.. they are just a little too much off the minecraft topic.. but give notch some time he is doing a great job at creating things that we requested.. im sure soon enough it will be good
Snowmen that fight things? What the hell was notch smoking? Also you go make a game with 4 billion lines of code then complain
This is not a valid argument, this is never a valid argument when someone complains about an idea. I do like snowmen, but he has every right to critisize an idea, it has nothing to do with code.
Honestly, though, it sounds a lot like arguing for the sake of argument. Making a game like this is largely subjective, and you can't really please everybody.

When all is said and done, Will you have said more than you have done?
Damn it, guys. If you hate it, don't play at all or stay at 1.7.3. If you like it, so be it. No one's going to judge you if you play. You don't know how hard Notch works in order to satisfy us.

<<< Every 20 seconds a poor dragon doesn't make it out of its egg and dies. All it takes is a couple of seconds to click on the egg and to make a cause. <<<
Um... how is this still up on the first page of the 1.9 section? I made this tread when the first pre-release came out, I didn't truley like it but im liking the newer pre-releases. I think the really big thig didn't like abot te first one is the snow golems, not just because they were silly as I said before, but because the replaced snowmen. Wow, I never knew this thread would still be up, and allot of people would be raging their eyes off on it.
EDIT:I even deleted my votes and put in new ones
Minecraft is a very different game than it was a year ago, but that's okay. Take a look at the website, nowhere does it use the word "sandbox," as it is NOT a sandbox game anymore. Minecraft has a sandbox mode called creative and a survival mode with challenges and extras, and that's what we all pay more attention to. Yes it is very different but that is a good thing

It seems like there will be potion making in the future, I can only guess the new nether items will be used in that.

I like birthdays :smile.gif:.
Why would anybody dislike birthdays?

A snowman mob was been a common suggestion ever since the beginning of survival.

Ghast tears are used for potions, and blaze rods are used to make brewing stands, eyes of ender, magma cream, and potions.
I love the NPCs. They feel like something you would find in Minecraft.
Yes, lily pads are only in swamps.
Snow golems to not kill stuff, in fact, so there is really no point for them to follow you.
Nether fortresses are so awesome! As good as strongholds, and I like their size. And they do not seem to be that common.
Nether warts make potions.
Yes, I love Minecraft and 1.9.
I pity the fool.
