So I discovered something interesting in a Nether Fort, and there were no first page topics on it. So here we go =D
Apparently these are called Nether Warts, according to creative mode. I found them in what appeared to be a farm room. They grow on Soul Sand, and can be harvested with any quality hoe. Small ones do not yield warts, but larger ones (slightly taller) have, I think, a 100% chance to drop warts.
Nether Wart Facts
They are found in Nether Forts, in small farm rooms
They grow on Soul Sand, and only Soul Sand
They have 3(Thanks Wa_delma) stages of growth
They are harvested with any quality hoe
They can grow in the light or in the dark
They are broken by water
Unknown if water causes them to drop
Bonemeal does not speed up growth
They are fire proof
They can grow in either the regular world, or the nether, as long as they are placed on Soul Sand
They, according to my testing, do not glow in the dark. If they do, it's less than mushrooms
As far as my results show, uses are unknown
If anybody has any other facts to add to the list for this intriguing new crop (or just the new slimeball) please post here so I can update the list.
May the creepers be few and the diamonds be plenty,
According to the Minecraft Wiki, if you break them during the first two stages of growth, they will yield one Nether Wart Seed. If you break them during the last stage, it'll drop one Nether Wart and 2-3 Nether Wart Seeds.
Yeah i found them aswell. Really cool stuff. I hope they are food or something fun.
All i know is once 1.9 comes out and i really start playing. I am definitely going to make venturing into the Nether a bigger goal in AE. Right now its sorta just a fun thing to do for a few mins.
Now i just wish that fortress/dungeon(I like the way Nether Fortress sounds lol) had some neat loot. Oh and some boss. Maybe higher spawn rate inside them too. :biggrin.gif:
Just reading the facts they sound like a nether mushroom. Has anyone tried making soup out of them? Also are normal overworld mushrooms still found in the Nether or did these replace them?

AS far as I've seen, there are no nether wart "seeds", only nether wart. Nether wart is directly plantable on soul sand without the need for any type of seed. At the moment they seem to do nothing but take up space and look strange. (also the list of blocks in creative mode show no nether wart "seeds" as well)
As of Minecraft Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3, they have a use! When combined with a glass bottle filled with water at a Brewing Station (Used for Alchemy, of course!!), it creates the potion called the "Awkward Potion". This potion, by itself, does absolutely nothing, but is the base for many useful potions such as the Instant Healing Potion!
Many :Diamond:'s to :Notch:!!!!! :smile.gif: :smile.gif:
The only problem is, converting the Awkward Potion to a Healing Potion require Ghast Tears!!! Oh dear... I guess Notch and/or Jeb didn't want it to be too easy.

It was kind of in jest =]
Thank you, updating post accordingly
Combinations of NW's and wheat were inconclusive

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Normal mushroom still spawn.

War doesn't decide who is right, just who is left...
I have no idea what their use will be, so this will be interesting.

They also had a use in 1.9.2
It just wasn't available without modding the code
