While not confirmed, Nightly builds would literally be an option to update your client, to 1.9 like the pre-release of 1.8 is. A unstable, unofficial, bug ridden version that will be updated behind the scenes as they fix things. You'll have the choice to beta-test updates.
There is no guarantee they'll even do this for 1.9, but 1.8 proved favorable for it, so they likely will once 1.9 is stable enough to consider letting nightly builds up. :tongue.gif:
I hope they eventually just put in a very basic framework that can avoid mod conflicts more often... or not nuke mods during updates. Something. Or even if all they did was just make it easier to install mods...
notch has already said there will be a mod api built into the game. That will most likely be installed as the very last piece of the game because notch would hate to install a mob api now and then have to change it. Too many people already have to fix their mods after Notch and Jeb update the game. It will happen and I can't wait for it. I'd love to see some mods that add LOADS of new mobs to the game. I want a full fledged RPG with tons of mobs and different weapons. I want jumping, and sword play to be a skill that you can level up and become stronger. I want leveled mobs that get harder the deeper or further you go from the spawn point. There is so much potential to this game, and I know the vanilla game will not include what I would love to see.
Notch has also said that when the game is complete and no longer updated he will release the source code to it. He is a true Indie dev at heart.
I'm glad they plan to make them optional. I'll probably install every one of them but some people would prefer to wait for a stable build with relatively few bugs, so it's good that they'll have that option.
Planes
Moving vehicles
Furniture
NPC's
Quests
Economy
Trading System
Aether
Increased height limit
Dragons
200x the content produced by modders in 2 months vs what Mojang has put out in 2 years
That's why I care.
Any idea who made the original Minecraft mod? Y'know, where all these things like worlds were generated and you could run around and build stuf- OH WAIT, that was Mojang! They created the entire game from scratch and are continuing to expand it. Now lemme see:
Planes - Not added early on because it didn't feel right to the devs (same with guns I guess)
Moving vehicles - Erm...minecarts? Boats? Pigs even?
Furniture - They make modifications so people can build their own...in a creation game, that's a good thing.
NPCs - Well...we're just waiting on 1.9 This HAS been planned for a while after all.
Quests - If I wanted to play Oblivion with blocks, I'd mod Oblivion.
Economy - With who/what? NPCs are being put in, it's only a matter of time.
Trading system - Got me there. Though SMP wasn't out of it's early testing stages until pretty recently.
Aether - Nice, new dimension...oh yeah, Nether...meh, Aether is more interesting xD
Increased height limit - Notch actually tweaked the coding of the game to help this.
Dragons - Everyone loves dragons =D
200x the content blah blah - Yeah, fair enough, except there's a million times the number of players as there are developers...so I'd say, on average, Mojang is doing more content production.
Note :- I love some of the mods that are out, they are really amazing. I just don't like how attacks at Mojang usually come along the lines of 'Modders do this faster' because that, frankly, is a really moot point. xD

If you look at Beta 1.9+ you see Access to Nightly Builds.
I was wondering if someone could explain what nightly builds are? There was a tweet about it in the references on notch's twitter.
There is no guarantee they'll even do this for 1.9, but 1.8 proved favorable for it, so they likely will once 1.9 is stable enough to consider letting nightly builds up. :tongue.gif:
It was really bothering me what it was :tongue.gif:
any official answer somewhere?
*Puts Dirt block down and turns slowly* "Modding API? What is this sorcery you speak of?"

I don't think you realize how hard that would be to do.

Instead of making an API, they intend to give select modders access to the source code.
