Thanks for doing this, I was wondering what was going on since prerelease 2. I do think thee is some respawning though cause ive had a few animals come back in my town which I set home base but it was like after I was gone a very long time like a week and it wasnt very many. I had weird hard crashes lately and didnt know why but it seems like I was hit with the zillion pig glitch. What is weird is the glitched pigs die with only 1 hit with a stone sword instead of 2

Most likely the animal(s) had traveled over from different areas. That's the most common phenomenon causing confusion about spawning.

Experiment idea:
Build a few markers of some kind to mark the boundaries between chunks, dye some sheep different colors, and track their movements over the course of a day.
I'm also curious, but do sheep grow their wool back? Because I have this brown sheep that keeps showing up in front of my house no mater how many times I trim it.

I did that in a controlled experiment that I didn't upload. I colored 150 sheep and let them run wild for an hour (Three minecraft days). The furthest sheep was over 500 blocks away. Most of them were stuck in holes ^^

Sheep don't regen wool.
Alright then. My house is out on the edge of an enormous grassland, so if they have the potential to move 500 blocks in three days, they could easily do it.
Lol, I hate to say I told you so to the thread creator, because his tests were too narrow and naive about the way mob spawning works to be conclusive, but well... I told you so :tongue.gif:

Thanks for your opinion, if you'd like to back those up, I would be honored if you offered tests of your own.

Science thanks you for your own invaluable contributions.
A chicken farm! Without chicken's killing themselves or escaping
I like it. I'll add it to the next update discussing chickens. Also, 1.9 is out and it appears the spawning algorithm hasn't changed, however breeding "should" be in this update, so I'll be doing some major testing today!
Oh and the thread was moved to the new update section :smile.gif:
OK, I've modded 1.8.1 in mcp, letting animals despawn again and removing the modulus check to attempt to revert to the "old" spawning system.
Killed all the animals outside left over from hacked mob spawners, then left it running for 1 or 2 days and nothing...
Maybe I need to wait longer, or perhaps have access to one of your test maps.

I'll contact the guy that I used his testmap from, and if he says yes I'll release it.
Assuming it's an F3 mod? I had a link to one in my thread earlier.
No, I meant physically found, after a while of running a mod I made that allowed animals to despawn and removes the modulus check, in an attempt to revert to the 'old' spawning method.

Ah, sounds like a nice mod. Hopefully we won't need one when breeding comes out, whenever that is..

Thanks for featuring me. Looking forward to further developments in this study. Keep up the good work!

Here
Port it to pr1.9 and I'll give it a test ;P
