I saw another post about sorting posts in a thread, which made me think a bit more: I know that some forums actually put the newer posts on the first page (thinking bukkit.org as an example). Traditionally, MC Forums has always had the post order where the newest posts are on the last pages. I think it would be cool to have an option in the user settings which automatically sorts the posts so that the newest posts are actually on the first page. Obviously the main post would still need to be on the first page, but the newest posts would be right under it. That option would be set to the current sorting method as default, but for anybody who likes the other way better, they can change it.
Also, I think the first post (the main post with all of the information) should be styled a bit differently. Even if the main colour was more of a gold instead of brown, so that it helped people see where it starts and ends. That would allow people to find the information they need a lot quicker when scrolling, without worrying about going past the post. Also, if the sorting order is introduced, it would help differentiate between the main post and new posts.
I agree, a slight bit of differentiation between the OP and the next post would be nice. Or, even better, an option to have posts from different people get assigned different background colors, if that could be done.
The newest-post-first sort is also good, although the original post should always come first (unless you really, really don't want it there.)
In addition, if you can't already set sort methods as default, it would be nice to be able to do so.

This is an interesting idea, I've noticed a couple of forums that work this way and quite like it in some circumstances. I'm not sure if we'll implement this, I need to consider whether it's right for this forum but I'll make a note. Thanks for the feedback!
