1. How does the feature work?
The threads would automatically update when someone posts a new post

2. Does an example of this feature exist on any other forum?
Probably

3. What value would this feature provide to yourself and others?

Sometimes you may post something without knowing that someone else just posted...

And also it would make the threads more chat-like (and more fun )

This is a really cool idea! I don't think we'll be able to offer this at launch but I've made a note of it and hopefully we can add it in the near future. In the mean time the "New Content" page allows you to filter by threads you're subscribed to, it's not exactly what you're asking for but it's sort-of similar: http://beta.minecraftforum.net/new-content?filter-association-type=2&filter-auto-refresh=y&filter-mod-view=y
