Personally I think notch should implement locks for chests, and you put thing and you can click lock. You get a key you always have it in a "keys" slot. Even if you die you still have it, and your the only one who can unlock the chest or destroy it unless if there is nothing in it or it is unlocked.
Cool idea! It would be very useful for multiplayer, and in single player, make it so that you craft a lock and when you right click on the chest with the lock in your hand it locks it. Then you need a key to unlock it.

Would be cruel though if you died and lost the key.. all your items in your chest would be lost (though - that could be the consequence/risk of locking it! And - think of the person that finds the key... then has to go around looking for which chest it unlocks.. heh

OMG you could totally be like "There are 10 chests here. You have 3 guesses to guess which chest the key here unlocks." And, you could have like "You can only open one chest. Each chest has different items in it. In chest 1, there is blah blah blah, in chest 2 blah blah blah and in chest 3 blah blah blah."

That could be cool.
