The other day, I started assembling a role-play server. The idea is a naval-themed role-play, not dissimilar to games like Puzzle Pirates, albeit without the puzzles and within Minecraft. What I am trying to do is to create a server which hundreds of people can play in with minimal lag, but also have exciting features like controllable ships, working cannons, etc.
The only downside is that, at the moment, I am the only person working on it. The more people I can get to work on it, the faster we can get it done and the bigger it'll be. As such, I need anyone, who's willing to help, doing what ever they can to make this project work. Whether you're a modder, a map designer, a concept artist, whatever, I want as many people to help with this as I can get.
If you're interested, leave a reply on this thread, or you can contact me directly via the official site, found here. If you have any questions about the project, you can leave them here, or contact me directly. If you have any suggestions for mods to use, please let me know using either of the aforementioned options. Any developers will receive full op status once the server is released, so don't be surprised if I ask for your Minecraft username.
Also, I realise that, as they say, "haters gonna hate" and that "everyone has a right to voice their opinion" but, if you don't like my idea and don't have anything constructive to say, please don't say anything. If you're not interested, that's fine, there's nothing stopping you from boycotting the server and going elsewhere.
I sincerely hope that there will be a bunch of people who can help me. If not, that's fine too, but it's your loss in the long run, not mine.
EDIT: If you want to help, but find your creative skills lacking, I need as many people as possible to spread the word as well as give donations to fund the project. It may seem like a lot for a minecraft project, but this project is going to require upwards of $2000. The bulk of that cost will be the computer that I'm building to host the server, but there's also web hosting, as well as a number of features on weebly that I have to pay for, but would be invaluable to have access to.
EDIT: I am currently looking for modders with enough SMP experience to update a number of mods for SMP. Please let me know if you're up to the task. As I have said over and over again before, I need all the help I can get on this, which, at the moment, does not appear to be particularly much. Money, modders, builders, they are all extremely important in developing this project and, currently, I have only myself.
i think this sounds like a great idea and i would like to know how to help. however i am no modder (i dont write mods) and am not really an artist. let me know how i can help. BUT if it requires it i can learn almost anything you may need.
Sounds like a good time. I've been running a small server from home myself based on a similar idea. Though the slow development has made the player-base small.
I'd like to contribute what I can: simple knowledge of operating a server, configuration for some common plugins, builds you'd like in place for when the server goes live.
I suppose I could give a hand. I'm no amazing builder, but I'm not terrible. I've also done a skin of Ulfric Stormcloak, and I'm working a little bit on an actual Texture Pack. I don't know anything about modding, though.
Also, I may or may not be able to put in a lot of time. It sort of depends on how busy I am or if I'm quite in the mood to work on it and all, just letting you know. But if that wont be an issue, then I'd be glad to give a hand.
Also, as I read on the Website you have up, I would like to try a hand at being a Shipwright, so if you could give me some sort of a challenge, I'm up for it. But I would like to assist in more ways than just a Shipwright, if possible.
Wow! I actually didn't expect this many positive responses quite so soon. At the moment, my primary objective is the map, so if anyone is any good at building islands big enough to support towns and cities, that's the best way they can help at the moment. If you can use MCEdit, that would be your best bet, since you can export your files as schematics, which I can then compile into a map. If that's a little bit of a stretch, then ships and buildings will also help a lot. Also, if anyone has any advanced computer knowledge (like building computers) I'm eventually (once I have the money) going to build a dedicated server tower to run TGA, so if you happen to have any suggestions for components, I'd love to hear them. Beyond that, the only other way to help, besides drawing concept sketches of ships and buildings, would be to click the donate button on the main page of the website.
If you do end up building schematics for me to use, I will need you to send me an email, which I will respond to with instructions on how to get the files to me, or you can post it on a file-sharing site and link it (but that tends to cost money). If you do up concept sketches, you should be able to post them on this thread without too much problem.
Can the map be worked on directly in the server? Or do the buildings, islands, etc, need to be built in single player/in something such as MCEdit then exported and sent to you?

I would actually prefer it if they could be sent to me, at least until I get the server computer set up. Once that's done, we can start making other tweaks to it as well, like mods and such.

Alright, I think that's about all then. Other than if you could message me some of the "Requirements" and such as well as how you would like the island or buildings and such designed. Well that would be all, I'm gettin' off for the night. Happy new year people!
I have just updated the site with a Legends page, which has a collection of legends created and/or modified specifically for the server storyline. If you are looking to build islands or ships as part of the map, this is as good a place as any to start. I will mention, however, that I am currently working on the Sky King's Palace and the Sleeping Forest, so I don't need anyone to work on that one.
I'd like to give building the Valkyrie a go, and I was wondering if the sail design could stray a bit from the regular, the regular being 2 masts 4 sails. I had a different idea for a sail, and wondered if that'd be a problem. Finally, in the description it states "It is said that the sails are as blue as the sky and bear the wings of the Sky King," What exactly do you mean by "bear the wings of the Sky King"?

First off, the Valkyrie isn't part of the Shipwright challenge, so you can do pretty much whatever you like. All the same, though, if you do a good job, I'll probably end up making you head of the Shipwrights' Guild faction. Second, what it means is almost entirely up to you. That's the beauty of legends, they can be interpreted however the reader sees fit. That could mean a simple wing emblem in the middle of the sails, or it could be taken literally to mean actual wing-shaped sails on either side of the hull. It could even mean both. It can be as big as you see fit, since you are the designer, but not too big, since there's a limit to how many blocks I can make move without crashing the game.
If you end up taking a liking to ship design, you should give the Flying Dutchman a go as well. That one's a little more ambiguous, since it's a real-life legend, but if you can find out what a Dutch man-o-war looks like, you should get a fairly good idea of what to do, should you choose to do it.

Okay, I was just wondering if other ships had to follow the Shipwright Challenge guidelines or not. That's all, I'll inform you when I've got it finished!

Yeah, the shipwright challenge is really just to prove you can build a ship according to a set of specifications. Since most people would tell the shipwright what sort of ship they want and what it needs to have, the shipwright needs to be able to do what's been asked of them.

Ah, okay. I just wasn't sure if they applied to all ships.
