It would be good for some resources to be destroyed over time, as that would make those resources more scarce, therefore making them more valuable and would stimulate trade between players.
It could also fuel conflicts, which could range from nerd-raging and annoying, to interesting, to hilarious.
Though honestly, I see a lot of potential for mods abusing their power and simply banning people who kill them or hoard resources. It's unfortunate, but hopefully the threat of them playing on their server by themselves will encourage them to be more lax in their rules and letting people do their own thing in a more laissez-faire manner.
I'd like to see survival mode have a more "wild-west" type atmosphere as opposed to the strictly rule based "don't so much as breath in a way the OPs don't like" atmosphere that seems to be common on free build servers.
by greifing i meant someone spamming the server with trees :/
I dont really think that's griefing considering trees are very easily burned down, and in order to grow in the first place have to be placed a few spaces apart from one another.
Regardless, trees are a resource so I don't see how a person running around repopulating the landscape with a resource counts as griefing.
yeah there are a few smaller loopholes that could make it greifing, like building a forrest next to some wooden buildings, but then again, that could simply be a strategy to burn someone's base down. idk i guess you're right. nvm then :tongue.gif:

IF notch implements a way to have, in the server options, trees to randomly grow, i would turn it off. i dont want to give those damn beggars any of the money my tree-killer monopoly clan would have... *evil laugh*
[/evilness]
Notch vetoed skill books IIRC so thats not going to happen however he did say that wood would be primary to crafting, smelting and other activities.
Yeah there should be miners, builders, lumberjacks and so. They could all trade resources (Miners- ore, Farmers- food and animals, Lumberjacks- wood and saplings) this would be great!

btw, Epic win for Tree killers.
everyone should should be able to do anything.
Yes. Classes would suck.
my point EXACTLY! and notch has said they will never happen.
Almost too fun... TOO FUN. I think this sounds so cool, and makes me want to play it so much more.
I could also see this happening.
The tree monopoly rules, but some of the people in that fort steal a seed, and go "scouting". They would make a small base on a mountain, begin a tree farm behind it, and make a cave base. They would eventually be found out by another scouting party which could do a couple things.
1: Kill them, steal the seeds, and begin a new forest for themselves.
2: Keep the secret for a price, and
-Keep the secret
-Tell them anyway
3: If they get the whole army after them, they could gather others for a price, or to let them be in their new empire.
4: All out war, and the cave dwellers lock themselves in their cave with a couple seeds. They could jump out and attack at any point, using surprise the the advantage while.. get this...
Someone has a valley that can be flooded, and when given the signal, FLOOD THE VALLEY, creating lag, so the cave dwellers could use that to an advantage. It would effect them as well, but they would know where everyone is.
5: The remaining tree-killers would make a small base somewhere else, and destroy every single tree in sight.
6: Now the tree-holders have a choice.. keep the trees for expensive prices, or make everyone happy by planting many trees everywhere. They would of coarse, hold a small "ark" of trees, then hold all the flowers they could find and start it all over again, each clan taking different resources.
This would be much fun! Would there ever be peace? The only time I see peace is when all resources have been exhausted.

but about maps, I could see making them would require being on at least half the visible space, so you see half the map or more, and it updates when you are looking in a direction, and open the map.

other than the forced lag part (i don't really consider that in the spirit of the game, nor possible with finite water.) thats amazing.
UPDATE: im posting a map with a sample treekillers base type. its not nearly perfect. and its possible to break into, but its ok. it really shows off the type of tree farming i like. ETA: 2-3 days at the rate its going. (schools a *****)
I read through this and though that the phrase "treekillers" is way too awesome.
Make holes under the enemy chest and steal stuff as they put them in. I think the inclusion of various thievery traits should be added to the whole idea.
I asked Notch if he could add a vendor and/or magic to make blocks infinite.
Spells for summoning, vendor for buying and selling ( infinite wood ftw ).
But I think more that survival MP will be like creative MP and there will also griefers which attack and steal recourses to remove them instantly ( droping in lava, leaving the server with them, droping then outside the map, hiding them in a secret cave).
This will make survival MP harder, cause it could happen that recourses wipe out entirly after some hours and griefer attacks.
But somebody could just as easily gather resources and keep them hidden in a chest in a secret hiding place and keep their resources safe from your "griefers."
Having scarce resources would make the game more challenging and add conflict, which would make things more interesting. While it would be nice if for a short while resources were plentiful for everyone (and resources most likely will be very plentiful at the start of each game,) it would eventually get boring as there would be no purpose for warfare other than "for the heck of it."
The only "griefing" I can think of in survival would be hacking.
Or taking down a server through malicious means.
It could also fuel conflicts, which could range from nerd-raging and annoying, to interesting, to hilarious.

The tree-killer monopoly clan will use the best weapon and the game ends. But since now, there is a huge amount of trees, it won't happen

But anywho, I have the BEST PLAN EVER. I will not say, as this could be an amazing thing that could cause the economy to explode.
