This would happen on servers filled with intelligent people.
Servers filled with friends would all band together to survive the mobs.
Normal servers filled with a few intelligent people and a shitload of idiots would have alot of small, badly made bases and perhaps a larger, better made "Intelligent" base.
I suppose this could be a plausible theory for the way a survival game could evolve, but I wouldn't be too miffed about losing wood. Stone/metal bases ftw.

you miss the point: wood wouldnt be used for bases anymore. it would be used for WEAPONS and PAPER.
paper would be used for making maps, and used for making books. books can be used to teach someone else a hard learned skill. that way there is much less reinventing the wheel, and if you take over a base that someone who is a bookmaker (someone who sells skill books) made you can learn any skill they knew!
I think bases should follow a natural progression, material-wise.
When everybody starts out, it'd be pretty damn hard to collect wood with your bare hands, let alone mine rock and metals, so I would think that everyone would start out creating wooden bases, until they have the ability to create pickaxes and the like to mine stone. Then stone bases are built, and, once we have furnaces built from the stone, we can melt ores down to produce the metals to build them even stronger.
That way, there are still uses for wood. I doubt we're going to need mass quantities of wood for maps and books, if they get added. Even after we get to stone and metal bases, the trees would simply then be used for food, rather than being chopped down for base building.
think of it this way: notch will most likely want it to be easy for him to code. im sure the easiest for that would be something like 1 book per block of wood. it makes sense, too, because of all the waste out into making paper. the early part of the game there is no wood for people to build their bases. this means that many will die while the tree-killers flourish. later, when the survivors have bases as well the tree-killers start selling paper, blank books, and wood itself. their base gets bigger, stronger and richer. everyone else gets poorer (generally, though at some point a few people will find gold ore and such, im sure).
sorry for any typo's or anything. im tired and i had a long day skiing today. sorry!
Yes, and if you do, can I be a partner in the foundation of the clan? I really think it would be cool. Let's get together on IRC and we can work out details if you want. My user name for IRC is agarrett
this is what i owuld dream of. i'd love to be the weak guys to be teh underdog XD
u gotta imagine that theired be politics, such as a leader whof decides what resources are more important, or what to build next, heck, even democracy with voting a leader every hour or so.
but yeah, i absolutely love this incredible idea. especialy since it's actualy possible.... oh and then you've got mines for specific resources :smile.gif: someone claims it syaing if they find anyone in their mine, they'll be killed, maybe 3 people own the mine together.
everynow and then, they spot a 'theif' in their mine, and kill them, since they have superior weapons. (Due to the good resources and on-the-spot crafting table(bench, idk).
pretty much the same thing as the wood story, cept with idk, iron or something. it'll be interesting to see kingdoms rise on a single resource, then watch when they've ran out of that resource... :smile.gif:
(AND IDEA FOR STEALTH)
a button that turns off your nametag to everyone but people you select, such as your 'team'. so people can't just randomly see your tag through some dirt in a tunnel. either that or you can't see tags through most material, cept maybe glass and cloth? idk, it'd still be great though.. :smile.gif:
EDIT:
after reading the stuff you guys have talked about.;
literacy could be realy useful. just watch:
1. everyone starts with 1 literacy (levels, basicaly, but that'd be the ONLY levels system in the game, to keep it from turning crappy.)
2. someone makes a 'level 1' book. able to be read by level 1 readers.
3. the book is by someone, as in, they actualy type the book. but hte level 1 literacy keeps them from writing (or in that fact, reading) any book with over 50 characters. so it's techniques or secrets, or even treasure maps
4. and as they read books (say reading 4 or 5 upgrades your literacy level), their literacy level increases. letting them write more detailed books.
:smile.gif: it just sounds like a way to put a small, if not almost useless monoply on books. but could make it where some random guy in a deep dank cave would sell you secrets that he has found about other enemies bases or hidden treasures... i actualy doubt this would be implemennted but it just sounds cool in my mind. :biggrin.gif:
EDIT Again:
i can imagine these games on a huge, deep map! that'd be cool, imagine each island is owned by a separate kingdom, or two if it's big enough. this'd make farming and territory, not to mention mining, MUCH more intricate in it's design. :smile.gif:
(about the servers full of diiots, i think having a premium profile will keep most idiots out, as in, you need premium to play?)

Concerning uses of wood, I agree with Danneh that it would be a commonly used material in the beginning of the game because its easier to get than mining (potentially without a pick-ax) and it's abundant. You get about 3 wood blocks for one trunk block and it's renewable.
Later, when the economy is moving, I see wood still having an important use in running the forges. Since it seems we can't mine raw coal, I assume the crafting forges would be wood-burning. No wood means no new items.
When people learn the importance of this bountiful, but critical, resource, I'm sure one of the first things players will do is grab a couple seeds before the map is burnt down.
What if one player who isn't a tree hoarder gets ahold of a seed, and starts farming his own trees, and then frolicks across the landscape planting trees everywhere like some godforsaken johnny appleseed of the internet?
My point is, the tree hoarders entire plan and economy would be ruined as soon as a couple of people get ahold of seeds and start their own farms.
Cool idea but... *Strangles my tounge so I don't look like a jerk for mentioning your spelling.* (DOH!)
Anyways, I hope most of these ideas, in this whole thread, get's implemented, it'd be so FUN!
i know my spelling is bad, but that's only because i type fast and don't care to fix mistakes, so long as people still understand what i'm saying. :tongue.gif:
anyway, yeah i can imagine one guys surprise after he looks outside of his tree horder's paridise and see's new trees have sprung up everywhere! :0
but what if this got in the hands of a greifer :/

Edit: then burn down their trees.
well id assume that their base would attempt to be well hidden, and well guarded. :tongue.gif:

should i make a seperate post for a clan, that would be good when MP survival comes out?
Have occasional trees spawn randomly.
Won't there be random monsters to contend with?
Ladon, I have a thread about our clan in minecraft clans if you want to join. It's name is the kingdom of egem.

And what would a greifer be in survival?
