I know that farming is eventually to be implemented, and i'd like to see something where you can plant different types of crops.
Perhaps corn, tomatoes, potatoes, etc...
In order to grow the crops, you would first need to take a seed or get the original block somehow from something (perhaps certain mobs would have a chance of dropping them? or a small number of them could be generated throughout the map.)
Then, in order to grow the seeds the player would have to plant them on dirt tiles that are directly adjacent to water tiles. Also, there could be some crops that would grow without sunlight (mushrooms, etc) in addition to crops that would require sunlight. Crops that are grown in sunlight should give off food that gives slightly more health when consumed. This would be a fair trade off seeing as how these crops have the sunlight requirement to grow.
By requiring crops to be planted adjacent to water squares, it gives water some real purpose in the game and this could easily turn land that is near water into very desirable property. It would also require players to make their farms look somewhat farmlike by make irrigation a useful farming stratedgy.
As you can see its a similar idea. FYI this map was made long before Multiplayer, I think it was just before or just after Ore was added. Still has hedge windows :biggrin.gif:

This is awesome.
Glad that i'm not the only one who likes this idea.
I also find it awesome that you planted in little 3x3 square patterns, reminds me of harvest moon.
i second those ideas, they sound glorious.
Your irrigation system is in-efficient though.
in that same sized plot i could fit 7 rows of dirt. :biggrin.gif:
I'll make a picture of a crop line with irrigation on paint. To be more realistic I'll have it like a real irrigation system with a source and make it possible to get from one end on the water line to the other. I'll also have every bit of dirt next to water.
I miss the old map generation code used in the older versions.
The new maps that the game generates are so rocky and uneven. They make finding a nice flat space for farming hard to find. Whereas look at the pic in the OP... so nice and flat and easy to farm on.

For example it might look something like this:
