I find that trees on average are dropping 5 - 10 seeds. This is bad because it means you can make huge forests really quickly and in multiplayer this could be a problem.
I also think that there needs to be restrictions to the tree planting, as it's such a powerful tool for getting wood, which I can only imagine will later be used to for example craft weapons, etc. You can basically fill the map with trees in a matter of minutes if you're quick enough.
There are a few things you can do to combat this, of course...
1: I think trees should grow much slower. Anything between 15 and 30 minutes to get a full-sized tree. There should be intermittent steps in their growth, too. sapling, small tree (5-10 mins), medium tree (15-30 mins), huge tree (60-120 mins)... For example. The huge tree would be bigger than anything in there now, like maybe with a thicker trunk, even, and branches.
2: Fewer sapling drops or an added chance of a sapling randomly dying before it can become a tree.
There are more, but those are two that come to mind straight away.
Perhaps this would be solved if it was easier to harvest the trees?
Like if somehow it could be coded that by harvesting the wood section of the tree, all the leaf blocks attach to the tree would automatically be broken up as well.
That way cutting down a forest would be faster and easier, and thus spamming a server with trees wouldn't but too much of a hassle.
I would suggest just simply sevely stunting seed drop rate.
Garuntee 1 seed from each tree, (that means you can at least replicate the tree you destroy)
then you will be lucky to get 2 or 3 seeds from 1 tree, and Extremely lucky, damn near impossible for 4 seeds.
I think 1 seed per tree is enough and 2 is a bonus. It means you never really run out of trees (unless you don't collect the resource so it disappears). And you can keep a nice sturdy populous of trees and building material of course.

I agree with you zuriki i think that you should have 1-2 seeds on a tree ON MILTIPLAYER but on solo i think we can keep it where it is=P

Can't get wood, eh? I think they make pills for that.

Nah, it really should be 1-2 seeds full stop, even in SP.
I'd like a better mechanic than just a change in the amount dropped. Maybe require some amount of watering on saplings to increase the number it will drop in a new tree. It's not like trees themselves are special since chopping takes so long (as well as cutting the trees). I mean I could be blowing up creepers which give me points and a lot more blocks (if blown up in a proper position).

Wood chops around the same speed as dirt (for number of blocks), and planks are harder then stone (feels about 2x). How is that not good? :tongue.gif:
this is really irrelevent but I grow and use trees as a natural advantage. I have a map and I made a tower where I could access the tops of trees. I used the trees as an efficient way to get around wtihout getting completly murdered by hordes of zombies and archers.

Zombies in the area will have the skin melt away and only their SKELETONS will remain, and they'll shoot ARROWS from their STERNUMS. Creepers will still explode as usual, but their suicide will also release a LAVA SPRING from their REMAINS.

Trees are nice in that right now they are they only resource that you can regenerate and harvest.
I tend to agree that there are too many saplings per tree. It should be 1-3 not 5-12 per tree.
You can farm stone too, using lava + water, although without sponges getting rid of the water is a hassle.
