While most monster get hung up on clever forts and hovering walls, creepers should have to true advantage of clearing out fortresses. Smart players will just lure creepers away from blasting their work to bits, or some even get the notion to make a monster pit, to throw unsavory exploders away into, to deal with later.
Thus, I propose that Creepers should be allowed to explode at will. If a Creeper cannot find a way to the player, it will help its fellow undead brothers by creating new passages. If stuck in a hole, explode at will! Respawn to fight another day. The true horrors shall await players. None are safe!
Also, add in timed monster invasions, where it will spawn large amounts of mobs that know exactly where the player is, and attempt to kill him. Maybe like, first wave is fifteen minutes into the game, so the player can set up base, and every five minutes after the first invasion. That, or alert all mobs currently on the map using that time table, to achieve the same effect.
I'm for this and more... convectional digging creatures. However perhaps a "Siege" option that turns waves on and off.

Perhaps if a creeper has sustained so much damage that it is close to death, it could make a kamikaze charge at the player and then detonate itself when it gets within range?

Or it explodes when it hits a wall after it's health is below, say, %10?

Well, if it hits you after about 10% health it's already going to explode.

What about lava creepers? Same as before, but after exploding, they would spawn a 'fountain' of that would spread out for 10-20 blocks. Additionally, the same could be done with water, and even trees (think of the destructive potential of 3-5 trees pushing up through your base, destroying all in their path).
Killing these lava creepers before they exploded would give you the rare 'lava block'. :smile.gif:

Umm.. this would be SO hard on programming. Notch would have to reprogram how liquids work. Which because how the liquids already work ok, he woulnt really want to do this. BUT, this could be made with lua (LOL DONT START THIS AGAIN!). it could probably be posible if it made a pool of lava (replace the blocks underneath it) and the block underneath.
This would be awesome, I think the varying health would be a best way to approach it though. Mind you, it'd remove the hit based skill that can be used.
Good idea! I've thought about it myself, but they shouldn't explode instantly. Perhaps they should enter a pre-exposion state where they shake around for a second or two, and a skilled player can spot this and shoot arrows on it to get it away from the structutre to minimize damage. Also you might be able to interrupt it from exploding by hitting it. This would require skill against multiple creepers as well.
I definitely agree that (although I haven't played Survival, this is my perception) monsters should be harder to outwit. But, as has been referred to previously, that the challenge shouldn't feel cheap. A skilled/intelligent player should be able to find strategies to counteract the monsters.
Ideas like random health add a nice wild card factor, where you don't know if a Creeper will blow up after the first hit, or the fifth. But, again, a skilled player can work around this.
In short, if you die, you should feel like it's because you screwed up, and could do better next time, and not that the game is being unfair.
So... Pretty much, just reiterating everyone else's suggestions with a thin overcoat of my own idea for a 'feel' of the challenge in this game. :smile.gif:
The thing is, the challenge is far too easy right now. If you build the right kind of base, you'll never die, and the challenge becomes a test of patience. Things need to become more unpredictible, more unforgiving, if you want a more full experience to this.
But then again, I'm one of those crazy gamers that plays hard games all the time for fun. Things like Monster Hunter and Demon's Souls are recent playthroughs that I had fun with, because they are so challenging.
I like the idea of Creepers being able control their detonation, but the moment a mob (pack, herd, throng, flock) of creepers catches up to you while your back is turned, it's all over! I would rather have something where they don't self-destruct to release the massive explosion. Something like an ability to throw something that explodes, or something like being able to spit acid or some other corrisive substance. I like the idea of Creepers spitting acid which basically just removes the block it touches (if it hit you, you would, of course, take damage) which would eliminate their traps and endanger your fortresses more subtly and sneakily.

O___O
Clearly, we have to kill this man, before Notch hears his wonderful, and no doubt infinitely frustrating, suggestion.
Good idea.Simple traps won't work on creepers then, making them stronger and unique. But creepers should be rare, and only spawn once a minute.Or somethig like that. And remove knockback for creeper death.I can kill one without arrows and not get hit by the explosion unless i move to it or they hit a wall.

Also, the wave idea is very nice as well, maybe as a seperate game mode for survival. I'd love to see much more rapid spawning like that.

Maybe make a different suicide-bomber enemy, but I think Creepers are rather clever the way they are.
Random health would definitely help their destructive capabilities out, especially in terms of chain reactions.

Maybe something that sprays acid blobs, which basically act as little tiny immobile enemies who want to dig anything they can (but really slowly)!
... What about termites, but they eat through ANYTHING o_o
---> Still. Acid spit? Priceless. Should corrode shields and armour and weapons too <3
