I know some of these have been suggested before, but im adding more detail to it.
Crossbows
It should do possibly 2x the damage of a bow, but have a longer reload rate.

Acid
First off, this may be a horrible idea, it just came to my mind, but Acid, would be VERY rare to find it caves, and it melts anything lower than stone. It looks like water with a green tint. It would add more difficulty to the game aswell. But, it could be carried in buckets aswell, and could be used as defences. Acid will NOT be found above ground.
And possibly how about creepers have a chance to spawn there too?

Spears

Left click produces a melee attack.
Right click throws the spear.
You can pick up a thrown spear like you can an arrow.
But spears do not stack, as they are too large.
Also a massive mushroom mongler.

Should be like a pole with a torch on top.
