I was digging in my branch mine and i found a little vein of iron. I mined it out and it made a hole into this epic vein. I dug a few out but i noticed there was a bunch of this diamond so i dug around, digging as little diamond as could to get these pictures xD
The largest possible diamond vein is 32.
They can get unimaginably huge when two or more veins are right next to each other. (So close that they combine into huge veins.)
The largest single vein is 8.
The largest combination is four of the largest veins since there's only one diamond vein per chunk.
looks like 4 separate diamond veins close together, one on the left, two on the right, and one in the back extending to the left.
Lucky find.
Still proves that "Digging around" a pocket is worth it
No, it does NOT prove any such thing about digging around pockets. If there is a, say, 1/50 chance of getting two diamond veins together (<2 blocks apart), then 49 times out of 50 that you dig around a pocket, you will come up empty.
The amount of time that you waste on those 49 times makes it not worth the 50th time when you get more diamonds, because you would have been better served spending all that digging time in a more efficient mining shaft pattern (like a straight 2x1 tunnel), rather than an inefficient spherical enlargement of a pocket. (tee hee).
Doing it the more efficient way, you might get, for instance, another pocket of diamonds after digging the equivalent of only 35 "around the pocket"s worth of blocks on average, instead of 50.

Really??
That means it isn't actually equivalent to dig a mineshaft in the center of a chunk versus at the edges... interesting. On AVERAGE, it would be the same, but digging near the edge is higher variability if this is true (chance of getting huge veins like this, but also more chance of getting nothing, compared to digging near the middle of one chunk)
There might be some way to exploit that further, though.

Przerwap, upon looking at some code I had just written: "...Gav... That's not how programming works."
I think your math is a bit off.. that seems too large.
But even if it is 1 in 900 million, that is pretty reasonable to happen eventually. Even if your odds calculations are fine in terms of % of this happening per chunk intersection, I am 100% sure you are doing terrible statistics in terms of the playerbase.
Assume 900,000 players about right now... How long would it take for the average minecraft player to dig through 1,000 chunk intersections in their routine mining operations (1kx900k = 900 million chunk intersections mined)?
A month or two? That would mean that every month or two, this should happen to SOMEBODY. And that somebody is going to get really excited and it is very likely they will post screenshots to the forum.
Which makes this very very plausible.

it is possible, the max size of diamond deposits allowed by the game is 8 the biggest is 7 (next to each other, diagonal doesn't count), BUT he has way more diamond than the chunk average (a really strict average) unless the diamonds are in 2 different chunks then it is fake

And the likeliness of that happening is this:
Diamond veins can have any amount between 1 and 8, so 1/8 to get 8. Four together is 1/4096. Each chunk that diamond can be found in is 6x16x16 which is 1536, 8/1536 as there's 8 ores, which simplifies down to 1/67, four together = 1/219961
That x 1/4096 = 1/900960256.
So there's a 1/900960256 chance that this thread isn't fake. Well, ****.
Roughly extrapolating a bit further from your calculations.
1 in 9 *10^8 chance that a given intersection of four chunks contains max-size adjacent diamond veins. On a given map, assume a typical user has seriously explored say, five maps. On each of those, maybe four diamond level mines/caves have been explored for a total horizontal area of maybe 128x128 each (around 8x8 chunks), or a total of 4*64=256 chunks/map * 5 maps, or 1280 chunks per user, times 2 million users = 2,560,000,000 potential places the big diamond vein could occur. 2.5*10^9/9*10^8 = 2.8 times it might have been observed in the total user population.

Yep, now consider that 700.000 people bought the game, 2.000.000 people are registered on minecraft.net (probably all of them have a copy pirated or not) and add another million of non registered users using pirated versions
thats 3.000.000 people, so eventually some people were going to found this and someone would post it here
There are 103,000 people registered on this forum. So that's about 1/30 of the 3 million. On the other hand, the people registered probably play a lot more on average, so it probably raises the odds that if someone saw it, they'd be a forum user.

I'm not saying that nobody's seen it, the likelihood is that they have. However the likelihood that someone who would post it on the forums is low. Out of those 3,000,000 people, how many of them will use forums?
IDK, but i would create a forum account just to show this

minecraft is like life, you start by beating wood, explore a lot of new things, settle down a bit, finally get that diamond, and then you life starts to suck and you go through hell
I like how I agree. 'Nuf said.
