You are correct when you say that he doesn't have a Alpha account now, unless his friend bought it for him. I don't think him using his friend's account means he's a pirate, his friend could have gotten the account to give to him.
But you are incorrect when you say that he'll have to pay 15 dollars and then buy any future release.
All updates for Beta are free, even the final one that updates to the final version, or released version, rather.
All updates after the game is released are free.
Only expansions cost money.
And that's not even a given.
Bottom Line, you will only have to pay for this game once. Not more than once. Unless you're buying a gift, or, you know it's 2012 and Notch has released an expansion.
