I've reached a bit of a roadblock in Alpha/Survival at the moment. So, here's what I do in a new world, I go ahead and get some wood, make a wooden pickaxe, make a stone hatchet, then cut down 64 logs. I then always, always make a 7x7x4 wooden hut. Always. Why? Because I can't think of anything better. What I'm asking of anybody here is how could I make my homes more good-looking? Any suggestions are highly valued, whether it be using a certain block, or pattern, or even just the shape/size! I come back from a great spelunking trip and I am welcomed by an ugly shack. Unfortunately, in the world of MineCraft, you must think for yourself. I'm not one for doing so and am calling on you, the people of minecraftfoum.net, to help!
Once again: Any suggestions are highly valued.
Thank you!
First off, try paintings.
Second is something you could do from the start.
A patterned floor like so..
Now, the roof. Try different things, I like making a small pillar on my roof so I can spot it easily, with a piece of glass on each side so I can see the sky.

I quite like bamboo. I put houses on bamboo stilts, use bamboo curtains and bamboo fences (with wood in the inside).
Picture of bamboo fence please?

I shall be leashing it, and taking it for a walk across someone's crops. If they glassed the top, I shall destroy, and then walk.
By day, innocent Cobblestone manufacturer. By night, malicious pig-walker.

That's actually pretty awesome.
I actually might use it sometime, because my houses are particularly ugly.

When in doubt, just build through a tree.
I have 2 houses built with trees: one on top, and one inside. They're really close to each other. They're also close to my spawn, which is cool.
I'll get pics in Fancy graphics later; right now I have to get to morning on my save file. :U
Sven the Slayer, how do you make chairs and the blocks with the planks around? And what about the fence? You guys use any mods for that?
Looks like a creative use of blank signs to me.
Those seats are just half blocks with blank signs on three sides. Stairs with signs are pretty standard but they dance in SMP and don't always stay in one direction.
My fence is just logs and step blocks. I forget who I saw who originally used that method. one of the other posters here has a nice railing setup using signs. This looks rather nice but isn't functional at all. It also looks weird if you try to go around any curves.

These are all wonderful! I never really quite understood how exactly to lay out a house or use materials that look good together, so my building usually end up as giant piles of stone. V_V
Usually, when I want some building to be aesthetically pleasing, I go crazy with glass. Lots of windows, cobblestone frame, and wooden floor, while keeping each room/section neat and cubical. My style's similar to the minimalism you see in high rise buildings.
Also, because of how I build the frame out of cobblestone, if anyone decides to set fire/blow up my building, it'll be left with a cool looking ruin. It'd definitely work better with obsidian, though.

My Youtube channel.
Contains Pachebel's Canon made with noteblocks, a working Rubik's cube made with pistons, and the ultimate TNT cannon.
I think some of the pictures in there are very aesthetically pleasing and you guys will find them interesting.

That is true. I like your kitchen, clever use of signs :3

It's an old pic though, the house is like 3 times the height now and expands outwards and the tree-stack is waaaay higher now.
It's modern art ok?
I run lava through the walls and cover it with glass to replace torches too.

My nice little cottage. Nothing special though.
Here's a shot of a manor/trade house I'm still working on from a SMP server.
No offense, but i think this would better fit in another thread. Note the "Aesthetically Pleasing" part of the title.
