I've reached a bit of a roadblock in Alpha/Survival at the moment. So, here's what I do in a new world, I go ahead and get some wood, make a wooden pickaxe, make a stone hatchet, then cut down 64 logs. I then always, always make a 7x7x4 wooden hut. Always. Why? Because I can't think of anything better. What I'm asking of anybody here is how could I make my homes more good-looking? Any suggestions are highly valued, whether it be using a certain block, or pattern, or even just the shape/size! I come back from a great spelunking trip and I am welcomed by an ugly shack. Unfortunately, in the world of MineCraft, you must think for yourself. I'm not one for doing so and am calling on you, the people of minecraftfoum.net, to help!
castles. big ones. i had a nice one, but its been destroyed by creepers and massive tnt traps. but what i do is a 12x12x4 castle, and then add 18 block high towers. really cool. oh and oregano. you cant build a castle without oregano. :biggrin.gif:
This is a gallery of my house. I find it very aesthetically pleasing, I don't know about you guys. If anyone wants to see more pictures, I can probably post some more of the other parts of my save.

"If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. The loss of Liberty at home is to be charged to the provisions against danger, real or imagined, from abroad." - James Madison
Here's a house I'm rather pleased with, it's practical and easy to build and not to elaborate.. Use off materials to accent others works really well. Logs to accent wood, smooth-stone to accent cobblestone, double step blocks to accent smooth-stone (not shown). Slopped roofs are a must, I personally like to alternate smooth-stone and steps
It's blurry because I am rather far away. The chimney goes to a fireplace on all 3 floors (incinerator in basement) The house is fully furnished and well decorated. I'm to lazy to upload pics though. The part barley seen behind the house is a bathroom with heated tub. The chest outside the fence is my mailbox.

I've worked hard and planless on this house for a long time now. I'm trying to keep it aesthetically pleasing, functional and easy to move about in, at the same time.
I will try using the different materials to accent each other... Thanks for the tips.
Smooth stone, wood, and glass are a good combination of materials. I've seen it done really well but I don't remember exactly. I think the stone is used for the edges and the wood fills in the faces... with glass windows of course.

Mm, all key aspects. When ever I make an, er, house, it's ugly, feels cramped, and generally bad, woohoo! :biggrin.gif:
Interior design is as important as exterior, you want want your house to look nice.
As you walk into the house you enter the kitchen:
From the kitchen you go into the living room. (It would have a couch but the steps are being weird in SMP) The living room has empty shelves as well as bookshelves:
(I went nuts with the signs just to get a feel for these as a design aspect)
Up into the bedroom:
(Note: That flower was actually left there by somebody, I'm not sure who)
Down into the basement Library:
And Finally the basement workshop:

I should also note that not all these designs were my original thought, I've spent time studying other designs and adapting and modifying what I liked and what I didn't. The kitchen counter and fridge, however, is pretty much an identical copy of one made by Swan. It seems to be rather perfected and not many modifications can be made to differentiate or improve the design.

Say if I were to combine the two, would the log roof catch fire from the fire 3 or so blocks away?
