Here's the idea, I intend to make a massive, multilevel, insanely complex maze in an alpha map. No hacks will be used. I'm just barely starting, so nothing to show yet, really I'm just curious what people think at this point. I will not be posting a map, I intend to post the save when it's done so people can try it. Having a map would just ruin the fun.

No, all walls will be smooth stone when it's finished. Atm there is some dirt mixed in, partly because I don't want to replace it yet, and partly because I went after some ores and needed to fill it in.

But that would require me to do all the walls with cobblestone, I want them all to be exactly the same. I think I'll have plenty of stone/coal at that point to do it. And creepers suck, one somehow got all the way down to me and blew a hole in the maze, then to add insult to injury, i ran into one right at the entrance which killed me again.
EDIT: I actually am trying to make it appear as similar as possible across the entire thing. Adding features would disrupt that. Unless more people feel the same way I don't think I will.

I like the idea of a maze. Agreed that possibly more than 1 of a certain type of thing.. or not! :biggrin.gif:
Maybe make a couple stepping tiles, some blow you up, some blow up part of the maze revealing a gap to help? A game of chance, but not required. :tongue.gif:
If you want to keep the whole thing super similar, go for it. I think it might be neat if you hide things (statues, small buildings/chests, whatever) within the maze, so that when people get lost, they still have an incentive to keep exploring the maze and trying to find the exit/center. If it's just a big, identical tangle of tunnels, there won't be much incentive to find the exit.
Okay, I seem to be getting the general feeling of variation is a good thing. I'll try and add some variety to the maze. Personally though, I'm not hugely in favor of mobs appearing in the maze, especially creepers. Many of the corridors are very close to one another, and it may get you to a part of the maze you would have to go up and down a floor to get to. The same issue comes up with TNT. Also the chambers are going to only have one block separating them vertically. So if something explodes, you now can get at another floor.
@Ery I will NOT be using any kind of hack
EDIT: I guess non aggressive mobs might not hurt. Although, because I intend to leave the player at the bottom with an empty inventory, I will not be putting in aggressive mobs.

Im about 1/2 way through creating a 600*600 block maze that is 10 stories high. I admit through that once it is made I plan on going back with an editor and placing the spawn point in the middle and then changing the center of the block wall to adminium.
I dont really care if the hack ruins the "legit"ness of the maze as long as it makes cheating impossible.
After some thought I've changed my mind, I will be posting the original map. This map is going to change over time(in fact it already has), but I think I'll toss out my first draft of it.
EDIT: I guess I should explain
BLACK: Passageway
UPPER LEFT COLOR: Floor ID color
DOT OF COLOR ON MAP: Ladder to that floor
GREY DOT: Ladder to surface.

Can't wait for it. :biggrin.gif:
I think that if it's going to be THE minecraft maze, it should be neverending.
As in, when someone finishes it, they add on to it, and pass it along to the rest of us.

You could hack in some monster spawners, give your dude a sword and make it into a kinda minotaur labyrinth. that would add some spunk.
This would also allow you to put in food at dead ends or monsters. This would also make lighting more important.
