Wow. Expertly designed and built. I usually can't stand things that involve game glitches because... Well, lets be honest, they'll probably be fixed sooner or later :/.
However, this is a marvel of minecraft engineering. Simple, efficient, effective, reliable, and beautiful. I look forward to anything else you design. (even if a bug fix causes this to be less effective or something sad like that)
Soo Much Better Than What I Had Before, No More Boats Going Up Without Me, And Hidden Water. Though I Did Have Some Issues With The Ladders (thought i could get away with 1 that was closer to the water pillar, but had issues with falling when getting out of the boat. no issues with it exactly as in vid)
fail (lots of falling getting out of boat, every time):

What I did to add floors/stops is put 2 ladders on top of each other with boats above and below. That way each floor has its own boat, so if you want to continue up, just warp to the next boat floor.

I like this idea best if my minecart idea doesn't work
Edit: had a thought, how do you keep the upper boat from going beyond its floor (downward) in this scenario?

Mining with your sis might be fun, but in the future use a pickaxe. It's more efficient and humane that way.
Linkto a totally legitimate site for a search class.
I can't think of a practical way to make multiple stops. I guess having such an elevator limits the possibilities. Perhaps hopping out of the boat and attaching a ladder is the only way, but it is hardly favourable.
Fantastic creation, availn! Way to go!
For boat elevators with stops, the only idea I had was with switching boat flow patterns, which is significantly more complicated than a single shaft elevator.
This stops the boat, but the minecart is very difficult to place just right so it stops the boat without knocking the cart off the track. Placing the cart in any other orientation doesn't stick out enough to touch the boat. Due to the way the cart needs to be placed I doubt this can be automated.
Having the cart so close to the boat is also a hazard, because when you try to get out of the boat you'll occasionally get stuck in the cart and drown from the dirt above it.
Will use this instead of minecart to get down to my mine. Less time consuming. More verticle. Makes it more like a mineshaft,

"The gaming industry has come full circle, back to a couple of guys making a game in their house. Indie games are far better than most games today because they're made with passion, not deadlines."
This is awesome. One concern - it seems to take a while to actually get the boat into the corner. Would it be possible to place water on the bottom of the pit in order to get it into the corner faster?
Edit: huh, just realized this is the first post I've made.
That brings a glitch to my mind. If you put a door next to a one high cactus, the bottom half of the door will be destroyed, while the top half of the door will remain, completely functional. But with redstone? That has to be tested.
I'll get to it on Friday :tongue.gif:
I tried doing what you said (in SMP) and the top half was not functional. Was going to use as a western bar door but it doesn't work.

Yeah, it will make it way faster, though the boat will turn in the direction you steer it in. I left out the water because I like having everything at right angles.
East is important because of a glitch, no idea why it is there though, east is where the sun and moon rise.
Essentially the water block is "sticking out" further north and east than it is supposed to, but only by a tiny bit. This is most likely an off-by-one error in the collision detection code that'd be trivial for Notch to fix (and would probably kill regular water ladders as well). In MC's coordinate system, north and east are both in the "smaller" direction (values get larger as you go south and west, which probably is also what leads to the south-west rule for minecarts).

I'd imagine you'd have to put in a dividing floor (eg. half blocks or glass); but leave an opening that you can warp through. Probably best to leave the opening in the active corner so that if you're climbing up manually (eg. if you left a boat in the wrong place) then you can still get through easily.
Updated the OP with a bit more info. I've also made a sig full of self promotion
A couple of people have asked for a tutorial. I don't really think this is necessary, this is very easy to make, but if lots of people have trouble, I might make one eventually.

Making the shaft and water stream is really easy. Placing the boat properly, not so much.
I dunno if the recent update fixed the glitch for this, but I'm completely unable to get it to work. if i place my boat on the bottom and push it into the corner, nothing happens, but if i spawn the boat in the corner, it gets sucked into the wall and glitches, forcing me to lose another boat. I have everything set up the right way, but the boat refuses to launch.
I decided i would see if this affected anything else, and my water latter which was previously a smooth ride to the top is now choppy and slower.
im having trouble putting the boat in place.
I have the shaft with the water set up, but I cannot get the boat to work.
Are there any tips you can give me?
I would really appreciate the help.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
