So I think I'm reaching the limits on how dense I can make my storage. 5 chests high, including one in the floor and one in the ceiling (as long as there's room above it (plus workbench and furnace which looks like stone from the top, embedded in the floor), all easily reachable:
Not quite sure where to put signs though. Is it possible to do any better?
Interesting system, and quite dense. If you want signs you could spread them out with a column in between so that you can post signs and then use arrows like :
<--stone
dirt -->
Once place I have I've put them all in the floor which is better than my last system but not practical in terms of compactness. I saw one guy do one that I liked pretty good up against a wall:

It is possible to do better, if you filled those chests with other chests. As for the signs, maybe you could dedicate a chest for them, if you aren't going for 100% efficiency.

Please excuse my bad grammar. I'm american so my english is pretty bad...
It is possible to do better, if you filled those chests with other chests.
You can't store anything inside a chest in your inventory/another chest.
It wouldn't be the most space efficient, but you could build a stack of storage minecarts and a system to rotate them (someone posted one of these a few days ago) to access virtually unlimited storage from a single area.
There's all that space in the floor between your walls of chests that you're not using...
Also, you could probably pack them in tighter if you laid them out in a checkerboard pattern but going into the wall (so they're still 1x2 chests, but only look 1x1 when looking at the wall itself). You'd have to leave gaps, but I think glass counts as a gap as far as chests are concerned. So:
(front view)
(top view)
(You'd have to have another layer of glass or air above these topmost chests, of course.)
And then you can put the signs on the glass, too. :smile.gif:
Hmm, turning them 90 degrees is an intriguing idea. I might try that. I hate to think of the logistics of emptying them all, destroying them and recreating them, but it still might be worth it.
Destroying them does empty all contents, SO dont empty just kill.

I will now write a witty signature in the futile attempt someone reads it, if this is the case than I have inevitably succeeded in mastering the short attention span of forum - ooh look squirrel!
I've been building and expanding a storage room in the wall of my house on my friend's Minecraft server (can only be accessed by personal warp points...and of course digging through the wall).
Mine is setup as a stairwell, basically.
Side:
Front:
Not the most space efficient, but it works out. The walls have room to add signs on either side to explain about the boxes...but I don't use them since I've memorized each box. As I fill up more boxes, I just build another level below it. I'm at 6 "steps" now heading under the house.
Not quite sure where to put signs though. Is it possible to do any better?

Yes, but that direction is crucial. That method is slightly better if you replace glass blocks with air then chests behind.

Logs are more chests but 2 blocks deeper. that is the most wall space:large chests ratio
I have a new signature as that one was a year (or more?) outdated!
This ^
looks extremely efficient. That is some massive storage space.
