Sorry that I keep creating new topics; I can't seem to find specifically what I'm looking for when I search the forum sometimes.
I'm finding some of the enemies quite difficult. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most games in 3D give you some sort of signal when you're being hit, or at least from what direction you're being hit? I realize that MC does give you enemy "noises" when they're nearby but this doesn't seem sufficient, especially when you consider how quickly you die once hit a couple of times by enemies.
Anyway, I guess I'm just curious if anyone has had the same reaction to these enemies before. It doesn't seem quite fair. Not to whine.
You should grunt and be knocked around a bit when you get hit, along with your hearts flashing and other such things.
The only way to really tell which way you're being hit from is to assume whatever hit you came from the direction opposite you bounced. grammar whammie
I'm okay with enemy fighting. Sometimes I'll get unlucky and miss a creeper as it's prepping to explode, and spiders are an eternal pain in the ass, but it's not too bad otherwise. Thank god skeleton archers have arrows that fly at the speed of pudding.
Then again, I don't go to the Nether. x:

It is the equivalent of saying
"We should add drug trafficking to the game to attract more Mexicans. I'm not saying that I'm racist, it is just that most Mexicans traffic drugs."
Thanks guys, for your replies. From everything I've heard through the grapevine, this game is just going to get harder, not easier, through updates, so I suppose I should stop complaining.
It's not that I don't think the game should have enemies or that I should die slower as I'm hit. It's just that I wish I could tell from which direction I'm getting hit. That would improve my enjoyment ten fold, but oh well. I'll just have to get used to it.
PS: Least favourite mob = skeletons. Sure, their arrows are slow, but I'm not good at aiming with my arrows and I can't really engage them in combat with my sword because they just keep shooting, gah! Oh well. :smile.gif:
soon you will learn to be as paranoid as me when playing on hard difficulty. many chickens have died from sneaking up behind me in the mornings when I'm expecting creepers bum rushing me from all sides.
Yeah, a high level of awareness is a good thing in this game. Creepers are especially notorious for pissing off players everywhere by getting them when they're least paying attention. For archery, if you get a goodly number of arrows, you can machinegun at targets if your targeting skills aren't too sharp; you can always collect up arrows that don't hit the mark. Mass shooting should help you to get a grasp on ranging your shots as well. Skellies are hard to hit in melee without practice, but it's definitely a doable thing.

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.

Hahaha... I do the same thing, actually.
And to be honest, I'm playing on Hard mode. And here's why: I have a little mini Acer Aspire, which isn't anywhere near powerful enough a computer to run MC well. So, I use my boyfriend's computer, and I use one of his unused worlds on his account. He plays on "Hard."
Sharing a computer to play MC... I know. Sounds insane. And it is.
The real key is that in hard mode, you aren't supposed to let yourself get attacked from behind.
There is more than enough coal to cover your mine in torches.
Also, Not only can there be holes in the ceiling, holes in the ceiling are many times more dangerous becuase they are hard to notice.
Ironically, chasms are actually somewhat safer, if you properly guarded your back.
any specific death-spots to go over?
Of course I have specific enemies that I dislike more that others. (My personal ranking, from hate to absolutely despise: Zombies > Spiders > Creepers > Skeletons.)
But, it's not so much that. My real problem is how the game is, in my opinion, a bit unfair in how you're unable to detect where the hit is coming from when you're being attacked and how sometimes hits don't do anything. Maybe it's a bug, but I sometimes hit an enemy and even though they turn red, indicating I've hit them, it will take a million hits or a million arrows and still, only one hit to kill me. This is with diamond armour and everything. Oi. Enough to drive a girl mad.
But oh well. I'm still very new at the game. Give me time.
Not trying to be rude but..... This isn't Call of Duty. THIS IS SURVIVAL! Besides... If you're going forward and you take damage where do you think the monster is? BEHIND YOU!
It seems to me that when I change one of the worlds to "Normal," his world changes to "Normal" as well, because it's all on the same account.
Yeah, it's a game-wide setting. There's a few things you can do:
1. Live with playing on hard mode.
2. Train both of you to go into the options and set the difficulty however you want it to be before loading your worlds.
3. Create a new user account on his computer. Worlds and settings are private to each user account, so you can have different worlds and settings regardless of whether you're sharing the same MC account or not. (Plus: this will make it easier to use separate MC accounts, which will simplify things once you get a better PC of your own.)
Also, as others have said, it's usually not too hard to tell. If you get hit, and you can't see them, then they're behind you. Run away to get enough clearance to arrow/sword them. Ideally, though, you need to explore and light places up sufficiently (and paranoidly check your surroundings) to ensure that mobs don't sneak up on you in the first place.
Don't worry, guys. I realize that I'm not being super specific, and I thank anyone/everyone for their replies. I'm okay with playing on "Hard" - if anything, I'll appreciate playing on lower settings more. And as I've already said, I've only played the game for a short time, so I'm not used to it just yet. I definitely know to check my surroundings and back up when I get hit, etc.
One thing does confuse me:

Honestly? As the entire view rotates about 45 degrees and flashes red, I find it fairly easy to figure out I'm being attacked.
I don't ever get red flashes/view rotation. The screen goes reddish when I die, of course, but that's about it.
But again. No worries. I just wanted to see if others felt the same way or if it was just me being a newbie. It's probably the latter.
The game doesn't set the difficulty permanently. It sets it to what the option say instantly. So set it to normal or whatever , then set it back to insane later. He can check to make sure you set it back before he plays too.
Then again make a script file. I use .bat and place this code in it:
set APPDATA=%cd%
Minecraft.exe
or
set APPDATA=%cd%
java -jar minecraft.jar
depending on what he runs the game from.
place the script file in the same folder as the executable and run it from that.
You will have your game then and he can run the executable to play his game.

Some people: make mc harder
Other people: make mc easier
More people: make more mobs

Zombies deal 3.5 hearts of ZOMBIE damage.
I really don't have enough information to help you.
