How much stuff do you get from that spawner in a minecraft day? Seems like a lot.
It usually is a lot, at least by my standards. I haven't just stood there and timed it, but I would say that I get at least 10 of each mob drop a day/night cycle. And I usually just walk around for a little bit, come back, and there's 10 gunpowder waiting for me.
I definitely got more drops for every floor I built. I was worried mobs might just spawn at the same rate, but divide themselves among the floors. So i would recommend extra floors to anyone making one of these. (Note: I am NOT using mob spawners, as always, it's legitimate.)
Oh and the great thing is that I don't have to stand anywhere to force the mobs into the drowning pits. They just wander in by themselves, allowing me to do whatever I please and just come back later.
One word: Epic
Where is the mine that you used to get the iron for your tools/buckets?
I have one main mine that is to the north of my base. I have had that mine since before I started Fort Zero. That's where I got all the lava for the moat and obsidian and where I have gotten my iron and diamond.
When you first turned on the mob spawner (removed all the torches / turn off peaceful) was there a period where nothing spawned? I was inspired by this to make my own big building but I am not getting any mob spawning in the floors.
Well I play with normal mode on all the time. I never turn it to peaceful. But I did use torches to turn it off the factory at different times during the build. I am not sure why yours are not spawning, but I have heard of others having that problem when they switch from peaceful.

On Conman's point, did you have to experiment with the size very much? Or did you just make it big enough to fit the corner of the compound, and it worked right off?
The size of the floors is one of the few things I did not have to mess around with during the build. I knew I wanted a lot of space for mobs to spawn and to fit in the rivers. I made the building so that it is evenly spaced away from the outer walls and main castle. But yes, the machine worked right away. And it worked more efficiently as I added floors and once I blocked all light with the roof.
@supercolio, really, my mine isn't that impressive. I made three wide stairs that go down to bedrock, then I found a vein and just mined out of that. And remember that I use a cobblestone generator for stone = tools.
I thought this would be a bit more... Free, like not everything to be symmetrical and stuff... Maybe little floating islands around it? This is just my opinion, it's awshum in overall.
I'm curious, how much planning went into the construction of Fort Zero? Also I think you have inspired me to create something even more epic. I'm not sure if I can though, this is insane.

been watching this for a long time now and I am loving watching this unfold very very nice work. I would love the save and also see the other 3 "districts" to be filled like your mob spawner filled one, been watching this for a long time now wish I had the patience for this. One question could you post a rough schemetic for that mob spawner. Looks very nice.
Thank you. Yea, I would be happy to make some kind of schematic. Just let me know exactly what you want me to draw and explain (how each floor works, how I positioned the water springs, etc), and I'll post that later tonight.
Wow. I would have to say, this is the most amazing fort I've ever seen. during the first few stages just the scale of it impressed me, but now with this massive trap, I really don't know what to say. The thought that must go into this :biggrin.gif: very impressive so far.
If this turns into an SMP server map, I'm going to sign in, salute and report for duty.
EDIT: And, regarding new generation patches, Notch did recently say he was working on biomes. My guess is that some cutting/pasting is going to be required in converting this into an SMP map. If not then it'll be just like my save, 500 blocks until caves spawn and redston appear....

I am going to make a similar sized idea. Could you please tell me how wide your base is? I do not want to make it too small... and how high is it possible to build ?
I made a large room with 2 of these springs, how can I make the current connect to carry items to a collection point?(Fixed this by just putting 1 water trap)
Items still get stuck in the back part of the flow, plus no mobs spawn in the room I made.
I'll try to get some pictures, but I think I did something wrong.
Yes, the room is completely dark, it isn't that large but it's about 10x10 size, I'd wager.
For those who are having problems getting mobs to spawn...Mobs really are supposed to spawn in dark places, as long as you are not on peaceful (or Multiplayer for now.) My best guess is that the problem is coming from switching from Multiplayer, with settings for no mobs to spawn, to singleplayer. Take a look at these threads for help, and if they don't, use search or the support forums.
And to create a single collection point from multiple drowning pits, it will really depend on how you positioned your pits and where they are. It might be easier to just have a couple spawn rivers flow into one pit, but it's all up to how you want to customize. However, below is how I went from a three wide river, to a one wide river.
Teal are the springs. This will create a water flow that will merge all of your items into the one flowing river. You can use a similiar strategy to create a single collection point.

No..this can't be my issue. I play single player only, on normal.
Matter of fact a creeper blew a hole in the wall outside my mob factory while I was putting on some finishing touches >.<
Yet after fixing it and waiting at the collection point for about an hour, nothing.
Mobs would spawn outside during night, but never in the dark room.

By balance, do you mean make it totally worthless?

Alright, to help explain how the factory works, I took pictures of how to make the spawn room rivers and the drowning pits.
Spawn Room Rivers
These can be made wider, thinner, turned in different directions or w/e. But here is how I made mine.
So you can make the spawn room as big as you want around these, just make the floor lay flat with the cobblestone.
Drowning Pits
Alright, so these pits that I use are 3 wide with walls on the side. Just take a look at the pics.
The spiders get caught under the ledge, the other mobs drown below.
And the finished product.
Hopefully that all makes sense and helps you all out!
