What I do is I cut down atleast 17 logs, craft a WorkBench, make ONE wood pickaxe, get three stone, throw away wood pickaxe, and make a stone one, get more stone, make more tools, get coal, make torches;; so on so on.
Pretty much that. Although first I mark my spawn point, figure out the directions, and head either south or west (for richer mining possibilities), and I don't do anything until I've found some coal. Once I see some coal I make torches, then dive straight underground and establish some branch mines around a base on levels 12 and 15. I don't usually bother with the surface until I've got some good mines established, then I come up for more wood, leather, and enough spider silk to make a bow or two.
First thing I do is what anyone should be doing: Workbench -> Pickaxe -> Stone Pickaxe
But after that I look around for reeds and stuff while chopping down trees for more wood. I then find a lake that's lined with Dirt, then make a huge reed farm... That's one of my signature marks: A lake surrounded by reed.
