So I made myself a little game arena to play in, using falling gravel to try and squash livestock.
First I fenced off a large section of land (about 23x25)
Then I built a glass platform above (about 35-40 squares up), with holes in a gridlike pattern making 2x2 drop zones. Fenced around the outside for a little extra safety, and placed a chest full of gravel up top for ammo.
Now, we wait for a target to wander under a drop zone
Bombs away!
Argh! Almost got it.
It's pretty fun to mess around with, though it's very difficult to actually land some gravel on a target, due to the chaotic nature in which mobs roam and how they don't tend to stand still for very long, and also because I built it pretty high up, so the gravel takes too long to fall. If I'm feeling mean, I'll cheat a and dig a 2 deep pit under a drop zone, wait for something to fall in and get trapped, then squash them. If I leave the area below unlit, I can even continue playing the game into the night, though it's much harder to see the targets.
It does, I tested it on ground level by just pushing a pig into a 2x2 pit and then dropping gravel on it. It didn't live very long.

Looks fun, but hard!
It is hard, but if you made the platform lower and the game field smaller it might be a lot easier. If you're very patient you might be able to get lucky and predict where they'll move. You could also make targetting easier by marking out the drop zones on the ground.
I had an idea for an improvement - if you went up there with a lot of glass you could reconfigure the platform on the fly, so you can control where exactly you want gravel to drop below. Then you could try and block them off and box them in, giving them less and less room to move untill they're trapped and you can drop the last few blocks on them.
On a random note, I've gotten a lot more flint since I started playing from cleaning up the gravel. So sand may work better if you don't want to keep replacing your gravel supply, but then again, this is the most fun you can have farming flint so either material works.
You are my new favorite person. *runs off to build a game field*

Glad I inspired someone, let me know how it goes!
If you wanted to make a game of this, you could probably give yourself a certain amount of gravel and glass, and try and kill as many animals before you run out of material. Maybe post a few signs up there with your high scores.
a while back I was exploring a cave and was out of arrows when I came across a creeper below me.since mobs always head towards you it was pretty easy to drop gravel right on his head and suffocate him. since then any time I come across zombies or creepers below me I just suffocate them.
I just turned this into a multiplayyer game, 5 people on top 15 on botonm. Its fun. Especially when you 'accidently' drop tnt adn forgot you lied the whole field with hidden tnt XD

I will now write a witty signature in the futile attempt someone reads it, if this is the case than I have inevitably succeeded in mastering the short attention span of forum - ooh look squirrel!

I tried this but the creeper was jumping and so I just ended up boosting him up to me with the gravel /Facepalm

"He's trolling the game mechanic itself. And succeeding."
Recently I built a mob trap which would capture livestock and drop them down a narrow, deep pit. Then I'd drop gravel on top of them, and listen to them moo, bleat & squeal as they slowly suffocated to death.
For some reason, the sound was disturbingly satisfying.

tip:
1-Place tnt inside that glass
2-Wait for a target to come
3-Punch tnt
4-???
5-Profit
I was thinking the exact same thing
if hitting them with gravel is too hard
use tnt
would make a mess of your playing field though
gravel seems easier to reset
