I realize this game is a work in progress, but I'm really hoping to see these improved soon.
Powered mine carts seem useless. You can't control them. You put coal in them and then they are off. You can only put coal in from one side, else it goes the wrong way. They don't attach to other carts. So carts get separated and that is pretty stupid (you can be sitting in a cart somewhere waiting for your engine to catch up and give you a boost). Powered mine carts won't push you up hills half the time.
This leaves you to using booster glitches like perpetual-cart-loops, resetting cart on a hill, and up-hills -- which somehow provide a boost if you are going fast enough (else it slows you down). And these are almost as frustrating to use as powered mine carts. Cart loops seem to give the best boost, getting me across my track, but half the time they don't spin correctly, and I have to caress them until they spin the way I want them to. Also, they are prone to just popping off the track and go flying or just disappear completely (and reappear randomly, if you are lucky; I was standing in spot X and said "hmm, I need another cart", so I went and made one. I go back to spot X and now there's a cart sitting on the track there? There's no way I could have overlooked it, I don't think.).
Anyone else frustrated with the state of carts? Am I missing something that would make me like them more? I just finished building a really long track that sits on railing up off the ground, goes through caves, and even goes under the sea (bottom of the sea in a glass tunnel). I figured carts would work a lot better than they do. But I'm sure Notch will improve them.
the first user (I don't tend to remember fags name's)
stated that there are loads of these threads ect: 1) your the spammer, gtfo. 2) more of these threads = the more of an idea notch gets. 3) gtfo fag and stop spamming good threads.
the second user stated that you don't know how to make a booster, he does. READ YOU FAG! they're just useless.
If we pretended his use of "fag" equated to kills, We'd be hearing Monster kill every couple seconds.
Wow. Never thought a thread like this would start a flame war.
To those that said boosters work well, how about some tips or a link to tips, etc.? I have found them to work well for some things, especially the reseting-carts-on-a-hill boosters, but for what I want, these aren't enough. I don't have a one way, circuit track. I have a back-and-forth track. I don't want to have to put boosters in the middle of my track because my track is a two-way track. I like having boosters only on the ends. One booster that can be used two-way is the hill booster. So, I may go with that as a temporary solution until [powered] mine carts are improved.
Boosters work fine once you figure them out, even if you only use a single track (as I do).
All you need to do is make a small section around the start of the booster for carts going the other way and you're fine.
You can even make an automatic distinction between manned and unmanned (empty, powered, cargo) carts using pressure plates and boosters.
I'm way more annoyed with how much space redstone circuits take
people use minecarts? I suppose if you inventory hack you could. But it takes so much iron to properly lay down a good chunk of track
Hardly. Since each track "recipe" gives you 16 track pieces, it does not take an excessive amount of iron to make a decent track. On my youtube, I posted a tour of a world with a really long underwater tunnel with a track that was all done without inventory editors.

When I first started playing (about three weeks ago) I was very intimidated to make mine carts. However, I did look at AlmtyBob's tutorials on YouTube and now I'm using mine carts all the time. Sure I get very frustrated while building them but once they are done they are great fun to use. I even have Redstone hooked up to them so that when I press a button my cart goes shooting up to my base, or down to my mine. Great fun.
I highly recommend AlmtyBob's YouTube videos.
Edit: Just want to add though that I agree that mine carts do need some improvement in the future. I did read somewhere that Notch was going to add a booster block, not sure if that is true or just a rumor.
I'm not too big of a fan of boosters, but they are relativly simple to make. Although, I am currently working on setting up a transcontinental railroad between mining areas, and I am going to try and keep it flat. With plenty of coal stops along the way, if need be.
Personally I dislike using boosters. They're cumbersome and feel kind of exploity, taking advantage of a glitch in the game's collision detection. I'd much rather have powered minecarts that actually work, or booster blocks/tracks that give the minecarts a kick to keep them going.
Yeah, glitches often aren't "pretty", but when that's the best you've got and it gets the job done, they're good -- to me. Sometimes a glitch (or unintended mechanic) is actually desirable and held onto. I find exploiting them to be interesting and requiring of wit, which makes them cool in that respect. It can also be fun to look for glitches.
But yeah, a powered mine cart that basically acts like an un-steerable boat (forward and back controls), that has to be kept fueled in order to run, would be very nice. I kind of think you should have to put water in the furnace as well. Water on top, coal on the bottom (steam). You should be able to use other types of fuel to increase its power as well. Wood should make a decent engine for flat land (about as much power as they currently have?). Coal should make a standard engine (can go up all hills with no trouble). Lava should make a super-powered engine (fast). The bad thing about this is that lava is way more easy to get than coal is, as lava is renewable. So, no one would ever use coal for the most part. You should be able to connect carts to each other also. You could have a passenger cart and a container cart that holds water and fuel.
How about some silly hand cart that doesn't need any fuel, but you have to continuously press a button to make it go? I guess it would only be able to go one direction (so, you'd have to manually turn it around on the track). If two people are on it pushing the lever, it will go faster?
Yes, minecarts in MineCraft are implemented very poorly.
Yes, some people like to use work-arounds like cart boosters to get decent use out of them.
Yes, some people like to use words like "fag" and "GTFO" to show how great they are (ironically, proving the opposite in doing so).
Yes, AutoCart has shown how a simple but effective cart system should be.
Yes, Notch will get around to implementing a good minecart system one day (that may be a long time away)
Yes, you could try using twitter to let Notch know that you're not happy with minecarts (although, unless you're Swedish or from a game magazine, your replies might be rare. lol)
Yes, you could try using the new bug tracker/feature request to give Notch a nudge, and hope that it differs from Twitter in deciding which ones are read. :wink.gif:
Yes, I've used the word Yes way too many times, and should refrain from using it again for at least a week to make up for it.
I'm guessing banned by day's end. Cause ya know - he's proving a point.
P.S. Boosters suck. Yeah I can make about 4 million different kinds - it's a lame mechanic requiring more track, space and carts. The carts themselves need improvement. Don't tell me there's nothing wrong with duct tape when the pipe is leaking.

I like this idea. Now lava isn't that "easy" to use because it needs to be in a bucket and if it works like the furnace, using a bucket of lava as a heat source consumes the bucket meaning you need 3 iron bars and a lava source for fuel (but how long does it last? That could be the balancing factor.)

This game seems to only attract two kinds of people: brilliant people, and morons.
Well, bugger. I know I'm not brilliant...

Maybe. But while it's definitely true that it'd be best to have some officially supported solution (eg. if Notch adds a booster block), it's also true that boosters seem to be the best solution we have at the moment. (Powered carts just don't work sufficiently well.)
