I've been having bad luck recently when running around lava pools underground.
Three times already I've been caught on fire while walking across my cobblestone bridge system and lost all of my items because of it.
Being the inexperienced Minecrafter that I am, I guess I never realized this until it's too late. I've already lost some diamonds and stacks of iron, and I've recently been furious over randomly catching on fire these days.
Now I learned how I'm bursting into flame after watching an ember leap out of the lava, lob itself into the air and land squarely onto my head. I guess I've learned my lesson.

"WHY"
Is there a way to block off embers from coming out of the lava besides covering it all up? I want to stay safer without wasting a bunch of materials while building unnessecary, gigantic platforms.
Maybe a cobblestone fence would help.

Its like going to a police station telling them how you stole a purse and demonstrating it, while arguing the benefits of it. You'd still go to jail because you're an idiot.

Now that's a suggestion I can use! :biggrin.gif:
I have plenty of sand and coal to burn into glass, and it shouldn't take a lot of materials.

That is curious. I have never experienced that. I like clearing a path around the edges of lava pools and I have never caught on fire from the embers. I should try to get one to land on me to see.
Seriously though, carry a bucket of water with you at all times. If you're exploring a cave and dig into lava and catch on fire you can drop the water to put yourself out and then pick it back up.
It is your proximity to Lava not the embers. I mine lots of Lava and at first I thought it was the embers but if you sit there and have the embers land on you nothing happens.
Just be careful, I'm pretty sure its due to the alpha-ish nature of the game which I'm sure everyone has experienced. I've caught on fire a couple of times and lost stuff when I hadn't fallen into the lava myself either. Just bring a bucket of water it will save you all the trouble.
Note that you can catch fire if you get too close to lava, even if it doesn't touch you (the classic example being getting too close to an obsidian wall with lava behind it -- depending on which direction the obsidian is facing the lava can sometimes set you on fire through a corner.
As others have said, when you're anywhere near lava, have a bucket of water on you (and ready) at all times.

An ember is an untouchable fireball that occasionally jumps out of Lava. This does no harm to the player but can ignite flammable objects
The wiki says otherwise.
ya I've never been lit on fire from sparks/embers. And all of the lighting in my castle is from lava pillars that are spaced every 6 blocks, so trust me it's not embers.
Lava will penetrate a wall through the NE corner, and set you on fire, but that is the ONLY WAY. Seriously! Why do people think that the embers are doing it!?!
Sorry, 'tis one pet peeve of mine.

Hi, i'm a scientist, from the NASA. I can make science, so I tell you as a pro, Minecraft is not laggy.
If you make a 5 wide walkway (and make it a full 2+ blocks above the lava it should be imposable for the embers to hit you in the center) or you can add glass walls.
