I was hollowing out the area underneath my house to ad a second floor plus making it even with the entrance to my mining shaft. In the very corner of my room, I found a cavern. Literally, the very corner. If it had been one block less deep, wide, or long, I wouldn't have found it. I've gone through 7 stone pickaxes and over 100 torches trying to light the whole place up. I've got 5 stacks of coal, 2 diamonds, 2 stacks of redstone, and a stack of iron yet I haven't even explored half of it. I even brought a workbench with me to make more tools. The thing is, I'm hopelessly lost. I don't follow the whole torches on the right side rule, because I have more fun randomly exploring. Any tips on getting out?

By the way, the Minecraft world will now be known as "Arth".
I'd suggest finding an upper level of the cavern, then pillaring your way up until you hit the ceiling. Then just dig straight up, since you'll be high enough to be away from lava. Then, once you reach the surface, find your home. :tongue.gif:

Your topic is like a tree. If I punch it down, plant a better one.
If I had a nickel for every time I had a nickel, I would be infinitely rich.
It's not nearly as impressive anymore, sadly. I've changed all the lava into obsidian and taken out the water source blocks. It was breathtaking my first time through though. Beautiful lava pillars dotted the place lighting so much of it. The water and lava meeting with just seamless.
Also, I have a compass. I had to dig up to escape the first time, ended up in the middle of the ocean about... 8 blocks away from my spawn. It was when I ran out of pickaxes... But yeah, I'm sort of hoping to find my way back up to my house.

Been there, done that...which is why I'm now in the habit of declaring a "NO BUILD ZONE" whenever I run across that kind of stunning natural feature.

Your next step is to build an easily-followed path between your spawn and your house.
Trust me, you will use it often.

I have gotten hopelessly lost more than my fair share of times....after having to dig up and ending up in the ocean forever away from land or under ice I started placing torches only on the left side and putting wood signs at intersections in the caves.
Haha when I did this, I jumped in a small whole in the cliffside to build a small shelter for the night. I decided to dig the back wall out for the coal there and I stumbled upon a cave. 4 hours, 8 stacks of redstone, 4 stacks of iron, 26 diamonds, and 17 buckets of lava later, I finally found my entrance again. I then decided to build my base there around the mine, because I hadn't even scratched the surface (I checked on the x-ray software -- I forget what exactly it's called). :biggrin.gif:
Go through the areas you already explored, if you find a dead end, block it off. After awhile, you will have 1 path, back to your entrance. I tend to use method quite often as I like to explore caves freestyle like you (forget the torch on the right rule.)

Just do what I do and periodically use sand arrows to point your way out. I randomly run through caverns as well and this has saved me from being lost plenty of times. I use sand because it sticks out the most.

I do this as well, except I usually put the markers in the floor, so they're easier to find in Minutor.
Sand is perfect since it never occurs naturally in caves.

I apologize if I came off as rude. The tone I was going for was a sort of "tough love" thing.
