I read about this game a couple of days ago, and will probably buy it sooner or later. From glancing at Notch's blog it seems like the multiplayer mode is very buggy at the moment, but there's not much mention of single player (which I'd play around in first anyway). How stable is single player survival mode since the latest version?
very stable, unless you're riding the cart into the portal, as mentioned above.
Multiplayer Survival is incredibly buggy and very difficult to play on all but the least laggy servers, due to bugs caused by the implementation of the health system. Many of the players who are most negative about the number and severity of bugs in minecraft are fans of the multiplayer. On one major point, they're right: singleplayer is a more polished experience. I think it's worth the money alone.
Just be sure to backup your saves because random crashing is always a threat. And the way the game regenerates lost world content but keeps inventory status can really be annoying, and even kill you in game.
But for the most part, single player is stable enough to have ripped every sense of my normal life away, fretting away hours upon hours just to make my virtual home as cool as it can be -- screw the fact that my real one lies in a mess.
Minecraft is the most out-of-nowhere addictive time-stealer I've played since the 3D Grand Theft Autos showed up. It is worth every damn penny of the $13 or so you'll fork over for it. In my first day with the game alone I had felt I had already got my money's worth. What's more, you buy it now in its Alpha state and you get all future updates to the game free. I have been trying to sell my friends and family on this one, and I won't give up.
The game feeds the creative side of a person perhaps more than any other, and the need to survive while creating your things just drives home the satisfaction of mastering your world (which is different for everyone by the way). The player not only determines how the game is played but takes an ever active role in the creation of the game world itself. I can't think of any other piece of interactive media that is so inherently interactive.
What's more, there are a lot of talented mod developers cropping up now with all sorts of unofficial additions to the game engine and gameplay. If this community takes off into TheElderScrollsForums territory of dedication, implementation and peer encouragement -- watch out! Minecraft will explode into limitless possibilities. The potential to be the most important indie game of the next decade is already there.
Survival is very stable right now, The game has only crashed twice for me and that was right after I exited the nether, but seing as the nether was added fairly recently I feel that It is just a temporary bug because the nether is still (just a tad) unstable

So, single player is cautiously okay, and multiplayer is to be avoided until better patched. Good to know. Guess I might as well try it while I have a free afternoon, then! :smile.gif: Thanks for the replies.

Do not ride a minecart into a portal.
Just. Don't. Do. It.
That's like giving someone a big red button and telling them not to push it. It's just cruel.

You need a bunch of obsidian to make the portal anyway...
If you do try to do it, than this creeper ( ) will explode.
Game=Super stable, as if it was released, with a couple computer bugs.
Forum=Worse than release 0.000000001, couple of flamies, trolls and giant annoying mobs around. Definetly wanna avoid it.
