So how did your first trip to the nether go? Killed instantly? Fleeing for your life? Post your first experiences here.
(My searches for a similar topic turned up nothing relevant, mostly portal glitches)
Anyways, I just built my gate to the nether and stepped in cautiously. Upon materializing in the nether, I see that I'm standing on the edge of a cliff. Before I did anything else I wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally fall off, so I built myself a safety wall. During construction of my wall I hear screams (I assumed ghasts were behind me) and ran back through the portal.

Minecraft froze up on me, and I lost my entire inventory. Second time, I managed to get to the nether, but when I went back to my world, it did it again. The third time, it worked.
I was teleported to probably the best natural defensive location in the nether; a large alcove with a large platform that connects to both walls, which houses a tunnel that leads to the bottom of the alcove. With a small fort upon the platform, I basically rained arrows down on any ghast foolish enough to float their way to me.
Edit: Coming back a second time, I accidentally hit a zombie pig...

As of version 1.2 of Minecraft, the cake is officially no longer a lie! Rejoice, and enjoy that icing-covered goodness! Also, scroll down.
So I had geared myself up for the nether. Diamond sword, six pickaxes, six shovels, six bacon, bow and three stacks of arrows, full iron armor and a bucket. My portal spawned above a giant lake of lava, and I was blasted in by the ghasts a few seconds later. I took these screenshots after I painstakingly crafted a cobblestone tunnel towards the nearest bit of netherstone (and learned how to take screenshots).
This is a shot opposite of where my mid-air tunnel went.
So on a 3x3 platform of obsidian, I began to make a tunnel through the air to safety. I would sneak out, place a block of cobble, then run back and try to expand on it. I have no idea how many times I died doing this.
Interesting story mine is. I opened the portal, went inside, saw an ocean of lava with LOTS of pigmen, but not a single ghast. I walked around for about 10 minutes, then went into a different chunk, where there was a ghast stuck in a rock.
So, i punched it to death.
I cant help but think this ISNT how your supposed to do it :smile.gif:

Looks like someone forgot their bow and arrows.

High-fives are a renewable resource, so there shall definitely be more.
I heard screaming. A lot and a lot of screaming. I was like wtf?
I then tried digging up in stairs to get out. I hit adminium. I dug all the way down... adminium.
Then I tried looking around digging straight from the point that my portal came from. I finally got a huge group of pigmen, instead of lone ones. Then shortly after, a bullet came at me. I was on tiny, so I didn't expect it. I went out and had to turn to peaceful, since I couldn't see the ghasts on tiny. I then explored a tiny bit, found some nice sights, and got a couple bits of lightstone.
I brought plenty the first time. I spawned above a lake of lava. Not near a lake of lava, not on a cliff above a lake of lava, but in mid-air with the closest netherstone at least 100 blocks away horizontally, let alone it was below me.
I had no cover except for the generated obsidian portal walls. Ghasts all around me. Whenever I went in trying to fight, I ended up in the lava losing all arrows. So I figured a couple stacks of cobblestone at a time were a lot less to lose compared to playing Duck Hunt (or Zombie Hunt) for hours to get enough feathers.

Obviously it wasn't in a position to fire on you. I'm guessing it got stuck facing into the rock. Either way, I'd consider it a gift.
By the way, do ghasts drop anything? I've not gone back since my first visit.

I love how everyone who entered the nether before the ghasts were made immune to lava was traumatized by their incessant screaming.
But on topic, I was excessively lucky because I ended up in a cave. I have got the full treatment that the Nether has to offer before; straw arrow hits pigman, pigman pushes me into lava, you know the rest.

According to the wiki, they drop gunpowder similar to creepers. Any time I've killed them they've been above lava. They should really drop something harder to get, like iron.

Yes, but that wouldn't make much sense. Perhaps lightstone? That's what you're there for anyway after the first few times, right?
Agreed, that makes zero sense. I love your idea of lightstone though. I always play 100% legit so I would love a combat oriented way to get lightstone. Where I'm seeing it in my version of the nether is about 80 blocks above my tunnels and 100 blocks above solid netherstone. After the ordeal I went through to get on solid ground here, I know a tower of dirt ain't gonna cut it for lightstone harvesting.

First time I went to the Nether, I spawned almost right in a patch of fire. I successfully navigated the firey blocks and went onwards to explore the region. I passed by some zombiepigs and continued to explore. This is when I heard the screaming. I looked up and I was being shot at by a ghast. I figured there was no way to kill them, so I just went about my own business, dodging flying meteors whenever necessary.
Then I came upon a zombiepig standing right at the edge of a cliff with an enormous drop. After a quick look around to see if there were other zombiepigs nearby that would see my attack,(I thought they attacked you if they saw you harm another of their kind) my evil side emerged. I selected an empty inventory slot(my fist) and punched the zombiepig right in the back, knocking him to his death. Feeling accomplished, I looked down, just in time to see him hit the ground. I then turned around and to my demise, there were about 10 zombiepigs heading my way.
I have no idea where they came from, but they sure got to me fast. Needless to say, they killed me pretty quick.

Oh, and I brought back a bit of netherstone too.
What I did not expect was that the portal I went out of spawned in a completely isolated place.
