I started a new level to try out the bug-fixes etc. and found this:
Anyone else getting these weird trees (there are three in this picture)? It's like the bottom of the sphere of leaves never got deleted as it should... Other trees act normally, and I get both big and small trees, so it's probably nothing, or even intentional. I just wan't to know if anyone else has seen this and if it's a bug. btw, I've never seen stripes of sand like that before, either.
Trees like that are somewhat rare, usually spawning in odd patches of dirt with holes everywhere. The base of the small tree trunk has likely spawned in a hole one block deep, hence the bottom of the leaves on the ground. I lost the screenshot, but I once had a tree spawn in a hole so only the top five leaves were sticking out at ground level.
The strips of sand are more common since the Halloween patch with biomes. Since you're right next to a lake, it's probably just a random artifact of the terrain generator.
In my tree farming zone (top of a mountain, so it uses natural light but is safe from mobs) I seem to fairly reliably get ridiculously tall trees in one spot and these sorts of stubby trees (or one just one block higher) in another spot. Not sure why yet.
thanks for the insight. I haven't had the heart to cut down the trees to see if they're in a hole, but it's quite possible that they are, although they're the normal height, and I've never seen a tree where the leaves curve back downward.
Enter story mode:
I say it's quite possible they're in a hole because I found a sand-hole in the ground 1 meter from my spawn point. It was one of those deals where the sand spawned on top of a cavern and fell in. Anyway, I got some wood but no coal (there was none to be found anywhere nearby) and dropped into the hole, then dug out the sand beneath me. I know you shouldn't dig straight down, but on sand and gravel, you're gonna land on something sturdy eventually. Anyway, it's pitch black down there, but I turned my screen't brightness all the way up. I could just make out some iron on the wall, but i kept going and decided to mine it later.
I continued down the path, but right when i reached a dead-end, i heard a zombie and quickly turned around. Going the other way past my entrance hole, i heard a skeleton and was about to turn around again when I noticed the edges of a dungeon! We're talking only about 30 meters away from my spawn!
Well, I left and got some coal from a nearby stone valley (another strange occurrence; it slopes just like a grass valley except it's all stone faced and there's exposed coal all around it). I'm currently on my way back to the spawner to torch it up, and it'll be a record achievement for me. I'll have found and conquered a dungeon without EVER gathering cobblestone.
Makes me wish I had done a let's play. I'll post some of the landmark scenes of my journey if you guys are interested.
I just made a new game and ran in a pretty straight line for about 5mins (covering about 6 biomes) and eventually found one (and only one) tree which had spawned like that. I dug at the base and can confirm that the tree was not embedded in the ground. Interesting find.
I actually got some of those more often then rarely in my tree farm I had in 1.2.2. Usually one or 2 trees per every planting or two comes up that way. Rare I guess in terms of numbers but I see them quite often.
I think these are supposed to be bushes. They started appearing with the Halloween update and I think they show up in some biomes more frequently than others. I've never seen one with a trunk in the ground, so I'm pretty sure this is intentional.
