ok so i made a falling trap about 50 blocks deep with one block of water to fall onto that brings the loot to me.
Does water cushion the blow for monsters so that they wont die even if its only one block of water from that high?

Life is experience
come talk to me when you level up.
I once had a mob trap drop from water level (little bit higher) to just above bedrock... most things died, but some lived. So I simply created a lava trap thing (lava, ladder, water moves under it) and that gave me steady flow of items.
i dont understand lava ladder traps. when they fall through the lava they catch fire, but doesnt the water put that out straight away
Sitting in lava causes damage, not just being on fire, this is what kills them. As a note, all mobs are able to climb ladders, so spiders will often climb into lava if you use ladders and lose the string (~1/3 of the time?), but if for some reason you want large amounts of string, replace the ladders with signs.
Not sure if it will help but were you using one source block? What you could try is make a water source a bit away from where the fall trap lands, so the last two or so blocks of trailing water go under the fall, not sure if that cushions the same as a source block, it'd be extremely shallow water but still drag items, then just make another cliff at the very end of the water line and have it keep traveling towards where you want the items to float.
